Lamp Driver Specifications
Electrical characteristics of the ECM lamp driver circuits, used for the Diagnostic Lamp and the Warning Lamp, have a maximum current draw of 0.30 amperes (300 mAmp). The design does not have diagnostic codes associated with either lamp circuit.
Figure 1.10 Low Side Driver (Sinking Driver)These circuits are low side drivers because the ECM provides a path to ground to activate the lamp or other devices connected to it. Caterpillar does not require dedicated circuit protection for these circuits.
Figure 1.11 High Side Driver (Sourcing Driver)These circuits are high side drivers because the ECM provides a path to positive battery to activate the lamp or other devices connected to it. Caterpillar does not require dedicated circuit protection for these circuits.Diagnostic Lamp Operation
An OEM installed Diagnostic Lamp is required to indicate a control system malfunction (diagnostic condition) to the operator for diagnosing control system component failures. The Diagnostic Lamp alerts the operator to the presence of Active diagnostic codes (fault conditions) in the electronic control system.Viewing Diagnostic Flash Codes
Caterpillar's proprietary two-digit diagnostic flash codes can be read from the Diagnostic Lamp. Active diagnostic codes may be determined using the Diagnostic Lamp.Count the flashes (this is the first digit), a brief pause will occur, the second digit of the flash code will follow. All active diagnostic codes (occurring since ECM received power) will follow in the same manner with a five second pause between codes. It is suggested the Diagnostic Flash Codes be used only to indicate the nature of a diagnostic code occurrence, not to perform detailed troubleshooting. Troubleshooting should be performed using SAE J1587 CID/FMI Diagnostic Codes obtained using an Electronic Service Tool.Warning Lamp Operation
Caterpillar Engine Monitoring System offers optional OEM installed Warning/Alarm Lamps in order to alert the operator of an engine problem detected by the ECM. The action is furnished by the ECM in order to protect the engine. The lamp output alerts the operator that a predetermined limit has been reached.Turn the keyswitch to the ON position, engine OFF. The Warning Lamps will come ON for five seconds, then turn OFF indicating the lamp circuit is functional.Low Oil Pressure Lamp
The Low Oil Pressure Lamp is used to indicate engine oil pressure status. Low engine oil pressure diagnostics provided by the ECM are based on engine rpm and actual engine oil pressure. On powerup (keyswitch ON, engine OFF) the ECM will turn the lamp ON for five seconds, then turn the lamp OFF unless the ECM detects a low engine oil pressure condition.High Coolant Temperature Lamp
The High Coolant Temperature Lamp is used to indicate engine coolant temperature status. On powerup (keyswitch ON, engine OFF) the ECM will turn the lamp ON for five seconds, then turn the lamp OFF unless the ECM detects a high coolant temperature condition.Low Coolant Level Lamp
The Low Coolant Level Lamp is used to indicate engine coolant level status. On power up (keyswitch ON, engine OFF) the ECM will turn the lamp ON for five seconds, then turn the lamp OFF unless the ECM detects a low coolant level condition.Transmission Warning Lamp
The Transmission Warning Lamp is used to indicate engine Transmission status. On power up (keyswitch ON, engine OFF) the ECM will turn the lamp ON for five seconds, then turn the lamp OFF unless the ECM detects a High Transmission Oil diagnostic code.Low Boost Lamp
The Low Boost Lamp is used to indicate engine Boost status. On power up (keyswitch ON, engine OFF) the ECM will turn the lamp ON for five seconds, then turn the lamp OFF unless the ECM detects a Low Boost condition.Run/Stop Lamp
The Run/Stop Lamp is used to indicate engine status.
