Information:

6V-4180 Timing Fixture Group
Illustration A.
Illustration B.Some of the shafts in the tool group provide for a positive clamp to the fuel injection pump camshaft. Illustration (A) shows a shaft clamped around the outside of the camshaft. Illustration (B) shows a shaft being installed (expanded) in the center bore of a camshaft. The 6V-4180 Timing Fixture Group contains the tools necessary to check the off-engine fuel injection timing dimension setting of current and most non-current fuel injection pumps. The tools are conveniently stored in 9S-6332 Box Assembly (1). Inside of box assembly (1) are a 6V-4181 Tool Holder Block and a 9S-8105 Block. This tool group has twelve shafts, four pointers and an easy-to-read timing plate (31). The two basic pointers (19) and (27) are reversible; they are located with two dowels and attach to the pump housing with one bolt. The 1P-7420 Pointer (27) can be used to center the rack by sliding the rack out against the counterbore in the pointer. In addition to the parts supplied with the 6V-4180 Tool Group, some additional parts, (32) to (41) are needed for certain applications. The tool selection chart lists the tools needed to check the off-engine timing dimension setting. The chart is organized according to fuel system type (forged body or compact) and also by engine model.Off-Engine Timing Dimension Setting Tool Selection Chart The timing dimension setting specifications are given in charts located at the back portion of this instruction. These charts are organized by fuel system type (forged body or compact) and engine model.A glossary for abbreviations and footnote references used in these timing charts is also included in this instruction. Always refer to the footnotes for supplementary information, or possible exceptions. An explanation of the major chart listings follows. The timing dimension specifications given in this instruction are the latest and most up-to-date that were available at the time of this printing. If there is a difference between the information in this instruction, and information given in another publication, use the information in the publication that has the latest print date.1. Line (A) gives the engine model and bore size.2. Line (B) gives the static fuel injection timing BTC (before top center) of most engines. In some instances, this will help in identifying the engine as to vehicle, industrial, or marine application. Some engines that are built to special arrangements have special timing. Refer to the engine information plate for timing information.
Timing Plate End (TPE).
Opposite Timing Plate End (OTPE).3. Line (C) gives the position of the number 1 fuel injection pump lifter. It will either be next to the timing plate end (TPE), or opposite the timing plate end (OTPE), as shown.
Clockwise (CW).
Counterclockwise (CCW).4. Line (D) gives the direction to turn the timing plate; either clockwise (CW) or counterclockwise (CCW). 5. Line (E) gives the timing dimension. On forged body fuel systems (A) this is the distance (E) between the top of the housing and yoke (42) or lifter assembly (43). On compact fuel systems (B), this is the distance (E) from the top of 5P-4158 Gauge (7) to lifter spacer (44) or (45).The timing dimension is adjusted by loosening locknut (46) and turning lifter yoke (42); replacing lifter assembly (43); replacing pump spacer (47); or replacing lifter spacer (45). Because of fuel system differences, it will be necessary to refer to the Service Manual Specifications for the timing dimension for some models. These models are identified in the timing charts.6. Line (F) gives the timing plate degrees that correspond with the lifter number. The lifters are numbered consecutively from front to rear in most housings, as mounted on the engine. The part number and the dimension of spacers and lifters that are serviced and used to adjust the timing dimension setting, are given in a chart located at the back of this instruction.Example Of Timing Dimension Setting Procedure
The example that follows is the timing dimension setting procedure for the fuel system used on a 3150 Engine. 1. Use the tool selection chart to select the tools needed. 2. Use bolt (11) to secure pointer (14) on the housing as shown. 3. Slide timing plate (31) over shaft (25). 4. Assemble shaft (25), with timing plate (31), over the end of the camshaft. Use bolt (16) and washer (10) to secure shaft (25) to the camshaft, but do not tighten bolt (16) at this time. 5. Install timing pin (15) so it is in the slot in the camshaft, as shown. 6. Turn timing plate (31) so the 0° mark is in alignment with the edge of pointer (14), then tighten bolt (16). Remove timing pin (15). Do not turn the camshaft while the timing pin is installed.7. Refer to the specification charts in this instruction to find the specifications needed. 8. Check timing dimension (E) for each lifter in the injection pump housing. For an example, lifter number 5 is the fifth lifter from the timing plate end (TPE). Turn the timing plate clockwise (CW), direction of arrow, until the 135° mark is in alignment with the edge of the pointer. 9. Install 5P-4158 Gauge (7) and 6F-6922 Depth Micrometer Gauge (36) in the pump bore, or use the 5P-4165 Dial Indicator Group, and measure timing dimension (E). Timing dimension (E) is adjusted for this fuel system by changing the complete lifter.Refer to the chart entitled Spacers and Lifters for Timing Dimension Setting at the back of this instruction.10. When installing the fuel injection pump housing, the fuel pump camshaft must be timed to the engine. Refer to the Service Manual for timing procedure. The illustrations that follow are examples of timing fixture tool installation with the 6F-6922 Depth Micrometer Gauge and the 5P-4158 Gauge. 11. To use the 5P-4165 Dial Indicator Group proceed as follows: Install the dial indicator and collet on the 5P-4165 Base. Install the correct contact point on the indicator according to the depth that is to be measured.Use the following tools to zero the indicator:* 0 - 25.4
