Recommended Actions
Check the Key Switch
Connect Cat ET to the data link connector. Access the status for "Ignition Key Switch". Slowly cycle the key switch ON and OFF while the status for "Ignition Key Switch" is being monitored. The status should indicate the state of the switch. If the ECM will not communicate and the key switch is in the ON position, refer to "Check Aftermarket Engine Protection Devices".Note: If the Engine Shutdown Output feature is used, the status for "Ignition Key Switch" may indicate that the switch is ON even though the switch is OFF.Check the Communications Between the ECM and Cat ET
Verify that Cat ET is connected to the data link connector.
If Cat ET indicates that the ECM will not communicate, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tool Will Not Communicate with ECM" and to "Check Aftermarket Engine Protection Devices".
If the ECM communicates go to "Check the ECM".Note: A new ECM does not have a flash file. The engine will not start and the engine will not communicate with Cat ET until the correct flash file has been installed. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming".Check Aftermarket Engine Protection Devices
These devices usually interrupt power to the ECM and the ECM will not communicate with Cat ET. Check for the correct installation of the aftermarket engine protection device. Verify that the ECM is receiving battery voltage.Check the Electrical Power Supply to the ECM
Verify that the ECM is receiving battery voltage when the key switch is turned ON. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Ignition Key Switch Circuit and Battery Supply Circuit - Test".Unit Injectors
Ensure that the J300/P300 connector is fully connected and ensure that the J300/P300 connector is free of corrosion. Check for logged diagnostic codes that are related to the injectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid Circuit - Test".Perform the "Injector Solenoid Test" on Cat ET in order to determine if all of the injector solenoids are being energized by the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoids" for additional information.Check the Engine Software
Verify that Cat ET is connected to the service tool. For instructions on programming the latest flash file, refer to Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming".
Ensure that 252-11 Incorrect Engine Software is not active. If the diagnostic code is present, refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM Memory - Test".Check the ECM
If the ECM is still suspected of being the problem, temporarily connect a test ECM. The test will help determine whether the original ECM is the problem.Check the Engine Speed/Timing Signal
Observe the engine rpm on Cat ET while the engine is being cranked. Note: The observation may require Cat ET to be powered directly by the vehicle batteries or by a separate power source. If the separate power is necessary, use the 167-9225 Harness (Service Tool Adapter). Connect the harnesses 70–pin connector to the ECM J1 connector. Connect the harnesses 9–pin connector to the adapter for the Cat ET service tool . Connect the red cable clamp to the +Battery terminal. Connect the clamp for the black cable to the -Battery terminal.
If Cat ET displays 0 rpm and the engine is cranking, there is a problem in the circuit for the engine speed/timing sensors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed/Timing Circuit - Test".
If an engine rpm is present, check the sensor installation. If the sensor is not properly installed, the sensor may read RPM but the sensor may not be able to sense the tooth pattern. The ability to sense the tooth pattern is necessary to determine the crankshaft position. Engine rpm is present when the engine rpm is 50 rpm or more.Theft Deterrent (if equipped)
Turn the key switch to the ON position and observe the display screen on the Cat ID.
Check for the following diagnostic codes:
224-11 Theft Deterrent Active
224-14 Theft Deterrent Active with Engine Cranking
If the display on the Cat ID indicates that the theft deterrent is enabled, passwords must be entered before the engine will start.Check the Fuel Supply
Monitor the exhaust for smoke while the engine is cranking. If no smoke is present, there may be a problem with the fuel quality or there may be a problem with the fuel supply.
Check the fuel quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Quality - Test".
Check the fuel pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Pressure - Test".
Ensure that the fuel system has been primed. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
Check for restricted fuel supply lines.
Check the fuel filters.Combustion
Check for combustion problems that can be caused by cold ambient temperatures, mechanical problems, and other factors.
Check the Key Switch
Connect Cat ET to the data link connector. Access the status for "Ignition Key Switch". Slowly cycle the key switch ON and OFF while the status for "Ignition Key Switch" is being monitored.
