At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick and bucket) before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows: a. Fully retract the rod in the stick cylinder.b. Adjust the position of the bucket so it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered.c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground.d. Shut off the engine, and put the hydraulic activation control lever in the "Lock" position.e. Move the control levers for the boom, bucket, stick and swing through their full travel strokes. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the pilot system.f. Slowly loosen the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank to release the pressure.g. Tighten the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank.h. The pressure in the hydraulic system has now been released. Lines and components can now be removed.2. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tank into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the hydraulic oil tank is 150 liters (40 U.S. gal).

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure in the cooling system. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
3. Utilizing the drain hose assembly under the radiator, drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the cooling system is 31.5 liters (8.2 U.S. gal).4. Remove bolts (1), the washers and sheet assembly (3) from under the radiator.5. Loosen clamp (2), and disconnect lower hose assembly (4) from the bottom of the radiator.

Disconnect cable assembly (11) from the governor assembly.10. Loosen the hose clamp, and disconnect upper hose assembly (9) at the radiator.

Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065-01 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) and refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh. Do not smoke while working on air conditioning. Inhaling Refrigerant R-12 or R-134A through any smoking material, although not toxic or flammable, can cause violent illness. Also heat must never be applied to a charged system. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
Use a refrigerant reclaimer before loosening any lines or bolts.11. Evacuate the refrigerant in air conditioning system.12. Slowly loosen bolt (14), and remove two hose assemblies (13) from the back side of refrigerant compressor (15). 13. Disconnect fuel hose assemblies (16) and (18). Put plugs in the hose assemblies to keep dirt out of the fuel system.14. Remove two nylon ties (17) and clip (19). Move fuel hose assemblies (16) and (18) clear of the engine.

Put identification marks on all wires that are connected to the electric starting motor and solenoid for installation purposes.18. Disconnect cable assembly (23) from the solenoid. Disconnect the three remaining wires from the solenoid.19. Disconnect wires (27) from the electric starting motor.20. Remove bolt (24), the washer, two clips (26) and spacer (25). 21. Loosen two hose clamps (34). Remove air inlet hose assembly (35).22. Put identification marks on all wires that are connected to the back side of the alternator for installation purposes. Disconnect wires (31), (29) and ground wire (33) from the back side of the alternator.23. Remove clip (32). Disconnect wiring harness (30). Set the wiring harness to the side.24. Put identification marks on two wires (28) that are connected to the water temperature sending unit for installation purposes. Disconnect the two wires from the sending unit. 25. Close two shutoff valves (36) for the heater. Disconnect hose assemblies (37) from the shutoff valves. 26. Open right rear access door (40). Remove three bolts (38), the washers and cover (39). 27. Remove four bolts (44), the washers and upper plate (42).28. Put identification marks on all hose assemblies that are connected to the main hydraulic pump for installation purposes.29. Disconnect hose assemblies (41) and (43) from the main hydraulic pump. 30. Disconnect five hose assemblies (45) from the main hydraulic pump.31. Remove four bolts (46) and the washers to disconnect pipe assembly (47) from the main hydraulic pump.32. Remove the three bolts and washers that hold lower plate (48) in position. Remove the lower plate. 33. Remove two front engine mounting bolts (49), the washers and the nut support assemblies. Remove the two upper rubber mounts at the front of the engine.34. Remove the two rear engine mounting bolts (49), the washers and the nut support assemblies. Remove the two upper rubber mounts at the rear of the engine. 35. Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to the lifting brackets on the engine as shown.
Be sure all hose assemblies and wires have been disconnected prior to engine removal.
