Diagnostic Codes Table
J1939 Code and Description    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
159-15
Engine Gas Supply Pressure : High - least severe (1)     The fuel pressure has exceeded the trip point for the programmed delay time.     The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
159-17
Engine Gas Supply Pressure : Low - least severe (1)     The fuel pressure has fallen below the trip point for the programmed delay time.
1390-15
Engine Fuel Valve #1 Inlet Absolute Pressure : High - least severe (1)     The fuel pressure has exceeded the trip point for the programmed delay time.     The code is logged.
The alarm output is activated.
1390-17
Engine Fuel Valve #1 Inlet Absolute Pressure : Low - least severe (1)     The fuel pressure has fallen below the trip point for the programmed delay time.    Probable Causes
Incorrect gas pressure

Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results
1. Check for Active Codes and Logged Codes
A. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
B. Monitor the diagnostic codes on Cat E. Check for active or logged diagnostic codes. Specifically check for codes that could be associated to a fuel pressure problem.
Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for diagnostic codes to become active.

Codes

Result: A code is active or logged.
Repair: Troubleshoot any codes before continuing with this procedure.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: A code is not active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check the Fuel Pressure Sensor
A. Record the fuel pressure from Cat ET.
Use a mechanical gauge to check the system fuel pressure. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Pressure (Gas System)" for additional information.
B. Record the fuel pressure on the pressure gauge.
Note: If a mechanical gauge is not available, determine if the fuel pressure reading on Cat ET is reasonable.

Fuel Pressure Sensor

Result: The gauge value of the fuel pressure is reasonable when compared to the fuel pressure reading shown in ET.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The gauge value of the fuel pressure is not reasonable when compared to the fuel pressure reading shown in ET.
Repair: Replace the pressure sensor. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes by cycling the keyswitch to the Off position.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

3. Inspect the Gas Supply Line
A. Visually inspect the gas supply line. Also, inspect the gas cooler. Inspect the lines for restrictions, pinching, and swelling.

Restrictions, Pinching, or Swelling

Result: The fuel lines and the cooler are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The fuel lines and the cooler are NOT OK.
Repair: Make the necessary repairs. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes by cycling the keyswitch to the Off position.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

4. Adjust the Gas Pressure Regulator
Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Pressure (Gas System)".

10.3 to 24.1 kPa or 1.5 to 3.5 psig

Result: The gas pressure is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The gas pressure is NOT OK.
Repair: Make the necessary adjustments. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes by cycling the keyswitch to the Off position.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

5. Replace the Gas Pressure Regulator

Gas Pressure Regulator

Result: Repair or replace as necessary. Reset all active codes and clear all logged codes by cycling the keyswitch to the Off position.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
