STRONGER MOUNTING FOR TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ON 3408 ENGINES IN STEIGER TIGER TRACTORS - LIMITED US
The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program.   Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
STRONGER MOUNTING FOR TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ON 3408 ENGINES IN STEIGER TIGER TRACTORS, 1375, 3105, PI7062 Problem The mounting for the transmission oil cooler on 3408 Engines powering Steiger Tiger Tractors can loosen. This can cause a rapid loss of engine coolant and severe damage to the engine. A stronger mounting configuration, similar to 988B Loaders, can be adapted to these engines to prevent loose mounting bolts. The new core is also more resistant to vibrations. Affected Engines All the listed 3408 Engines are included in this Product Improvement Program. The corresponding Steiger Tractor S/N and other information are in the attached list. Action Requested (Parts Stock Action Not Needed) Install the new parts on the listed 3408 engines. (New parts list attached.) Installation of these parts provides a stronger mounting for the transmission cooler core similar to that on 988B Loaders. To install the new parts: 1. Drain cooling system. 2. Disconnect the lines at the transmission cooler. 3. Remove fumes disposal tube and the radiator bottom hose and tube. 4. Disconnect cab heater lines at water pump. 5. Remove transmission oil cooler and its water lines connections. 6. Install the new curved bonnet (4N8451) flange, spacer, seal, and hardware on the engine oil cooler water line. Reuse the one-piece 7N7642 Bonnet on other end of engine oil cooler. 7. Bolt 4N2196 Bonnet-Oil Cooler inlet to water pump. Do not use washers. (The 2W8689 Bonnet Group - Oil Cooler consists of these bolt-on parts.) If coolant flow switch desired, use 6N7145 Bonnet. 8. Install the 2W8520 Water Elbow. (The 2W8690 Water Elbow Group consists of these parts.) 9. Install the 2W999 Core Assembly (Transmission Oil Cooler), gaskets, and bolts to the water line bonnets. Place the oil outlet and inlet openings so they point up and out at about a 45 deg. angle - position No. 3. Some modifications will need to be made to connect the transmission cooler oil lines. Use 2 - 8B9580 Reducer Bushings and 2 - 6K3458 Adapters (90 deg.). 10. Install new fumes disposal tube (2W6540). Fasten it to the rear of the new transmission cooler with the 1S396 Clip and 2W5555 Strap Assembly. 11. Referring to the illustration of the engine oil lines, install the new parts and seals. Use the new 1P1367 Plunger as it reduces maximum engine oil pressure during cold starts. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) 12. Reroute the heater tubes along the tractor frame and bend them around the new front bonnet. Fasten the lines to the frame with a clip, and reconnect them to the water pump with hoses to absorb vibrations. 13. Refill cooling system, operate engine and check for leaks. Warranty Allowances (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Parts Disposition Destroy the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts disposition. Expiration Date June 30, 1984. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) (SEE ILLUSTRATION)
