Remove the cowling. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cowling (Radiator) - Remove and Install".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali. At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Note: Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Drain the coolant from both sides of the radiator into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the cooling system is 379 L (100 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7173, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the correct procedure.
Illustration 1 g00481243Note: The radiator can be removed without disconnecting the refrigerant hose assemblies from refrigerant condenser (2). Refrigerant condenser (2) can be removed from the radiator and set aside. If refrigerant condenser (2) will be disconnected from the refrigerant hose assemblies, the refrigerant must be recovered from the air conditioning system. Refer to Air Conditioning and Heating Testing and Adjusting, SENR5664, "Refrigerant Recovery". Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Air Conditioning and Heating Testing and Adjusting, SENR5664, "Refrigerant System Adjusting - Evacuate".
Remove four bolts (4), the washers and the clips in order to disconnect the hose assemblies from the radiator core. Remove four bolts (1) and the washers from refrigerant condenser (2).
Remove eight bolts (3), and the washers from refrigerant condenser (2). Support refrigerant condenser (2) on the side of the truck with wire.
