Information:
Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a "DO NOT OPERATE" or similar warning tag attached to the start switch or controls. The operator must be satisfied that no one will be endangered before starting the engine.Move all controls to the HOLD position before starting the engine. Before Starting the Engine
Walk-Around Inspection
For maximum service life of your engine, thoroughly inspect the installation before starting the engine. Look for such items as fuel, oil or coolant leaks, loose bolts, worn belts and trash build-up. Keep the engine area clean. Remove trash build-up and have repairs made as needed. Perform required Daily and other periodic maintenance before starting the engine. Refer to the Maintenance Schedule and Daily maintenance recommendations in this Manual for details.
All valves in fuel return lines must be open before and during engine operation to prevent high fuel pressure. High fuel pressure may cause filter housing failure or other damage. Each time any significant quantity of oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near the engine it should be cleaned up. Accumulated grease and oil on an engine or platform is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high pressure water, at least every 1000 hours or each time any significant quantity of oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near an engine and working area.Wipe clean all fittings, caps and plugs before servicing.
Pre-Start Checks
Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a DO NOT OPERATE or similar warning tag attached to the start switch or controls. The operator must be satisfied that no one will be endangered before starting the engine. All guards must be in place. Repair or replace all guards that are damaged or missing.Starting Information
Above 12°C (55°F)
Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, ensure exhaust is vented outside and piping is connected properly.
For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, make provision to shut down the engine should a runaway (overspeed) occur. This may be accomplished by cutting off the air and/or fuel supply to the engine.
Do not start the engine or move any of the controls if there is a DO NOT OPERATE or similar warning tag attached to the start switch or controls. The operator must be satisfied that no one will be endangered before and when starting the engine. If the engine has not been run for several weeks, fuel may have drained and allowed air into the filter housing. Also, when fuel filters have been changed, some air space will be left in the housing. In these instances, prime the fuel system. Refer to Priming the Fuel System in this publication for more information.Cold Weather Starting Aids
When using starting fluid, use it sparingly and spray it only while cranking the engine. Use ether for cold starting purposes only. Failure to do so, could result in an explosion and/or fire and possible personal injury.
Heating of jacket water (coolant) and crankcase oil may be required to assist starting in temperatures below 12°C (55°F). Startability will be improved at temperatures below 12°C (55°F) by the use of the jacket water (coolant) heater.
Caterpillar engines are designed to start at temperatures above 12°C (55°F) without using starting aids. Engine jacket water heaters (optional) can be provided to maintain the minimum temperature when the engine is not running. Maintain 32°C (90°F) coolant temperature in block at all times. An additional air tank volume and/or higher pressure for air starting systems, or an extra battery capacity for electric starting, may be required to start the engine at colder temperatures. For starting below -18°C (0°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. If a potential for lower starting temperature exists, consult your Caterpillar dealer. Contact your Caterpillar dealer before installing a dipstick crankcase oil heater. Oil pan immersion heaters are not recommended for crankcase oil heating. Refer to the Safety section regarding ether and other starting aids.Air Starting (If Equipped)
Perform all of the preliminary starting checks.1. Open and close the drain valve on the bottom of the air tank to drain condensation and lube fluid carryover.2. Check the air supply pressure. The air starting motors require a minimum of 690 kPa (100 psi) air pressure to operate properly. The maximum air pressure must not exceed 1550 kPa (225 psi). The normal air pressure will be 758 kPa (110 psi) to 965 kPa (140 psi). The reservoir should have a pressure gage to show the reservoir condition.3. If equipped with an air operated prelube system, check the lubricant level in the prelube pump and air lubricator. Keep bowl at least half full and add lubricant (engine oil or diesel fuel), if necessary.4. Engage engine start sequence. Set the engine Engine Control Switch to the MAN. START position. Refer to Engine Control topic for information regarding your application. (Push the ether start switch and hold it for three seconds, then release it, if required.)Electric Starting
Do not engage starter when flywheel is turning. Do not start engine under load.
Startability will be improved at temperatures below 12°C (55°F) by the use of a starting aid and/or use of a jacket water (coolant) heater or other means to heat the crankcase oil.Start the engine using the following procedure:1. Place the transmission or driven equipment in NEUTRAL (and disengage the flywheel clutch, if equipped).2. Move the throttle to approximately half engine speed (LOW IDLE) to get the fuel rack to move to the FUEL ON position.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again.Turbocharger (if equipped) damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light or gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.
3. Turn the power switch to START (or battery disconnect switch to the ON position). Crank the engine. If the engine does not start after ten seconds, move the governor
