1514-4 Cylinder #14 Detonation Sensor : Voltage Below Normal The ECM has detected a voltage on the signal line of the sensor that is less than the trip point for more than 10 seconds. Detonation sensors are located on the upper portion of the cylinder block between every two cylinders. Each sensor monitors the two adjacent cylinders. For example, one sensor monitors the detonation levels for cylinders 1 and 3.

Location of the detonation sensors (right side and left side engine views)
(1) Detonation sensors for the cylinders that are on the right side of the engine (right side engine view)
(2) Detonation sensors for the cylinders that are on the left side of the engine (left side engine view) The ECM supplies 8 VDC to each detonation sensor (1) and (2). The detonation sensors provide electrical signals to each ECM that represent mechanical engine vibrations that are directly related to the level of engine detonation. The signals are amplified and the signals are filtered. The frequency of the signal corresponds to the mechanical frequency of the vibrations that are caused by ignition detonation. The amplitude of the signal is proportional to the intensity of these vibrations. The ECM monitors the detonation sensors. The signals are monitored in order to determine the presence and the severity of the detonation. The ECM can adjust the timing of the cylinders in order to limit detonation levels. The timing may be adjusted for a single cylinder or for more than one cylinder. The timing may be adjusted for all of the cylinders, if necessary. If the engine derate does not eliminate the detonation, the ECM will shut down the engine. The maximum timing adjustment is limited to 6 degrees before an engine shutdown is initiated. The ECM can adjust timing by as few as 3 degrees for light detonation levels. The timing can be adjusted up to 6 degrees for severe detonation. A proportional strategy is used for advancing the timing after the timing has been adjusted and the detonation has stopped. The rate of advance is based upon the level of detonation. The rate is faster for lighter detonation. The maximum rate for the
