Problem
The 7C9699 Compressor Nut that holds the compressor wheel to the shaft needs to be tightened to a higher torque on certain turbocharger groups and cartridge groups used on 3176 Engines. The turbochargers that need to be reworked are 0R6007, 0R6008, 0R6009, 9Y1286, 9Y1287, and 9Y1288, Turbocharger Groups with date codes in the serial number prior to May 15, 1989 - E1589. The cartridge groups that need to be reworked are 0R6017, 0R6018, 9Y7228, and 9Y7229 Cartridge Groups with date codes in the serial number prior to May 15, 1989 - E1589. (---88 or A thru E--89) See the illustration for date code location. ****** IMAGE: SEBE4147.00001.001 CAPTION: Location Of Date Code On Nameplate
Action Required
Rework all 0R6007, 0R6008, 0R6009, 9Y1286, 9Y1287, and 9Y1288, Turbocharger Groups and 0R6017, 0R6018, 9Y7228, and 9Y7229 Cartridge Groups in parts stock with date codes in the serial number prior to May 15, 1989 - E1589. Rework the turbocharger and cartridge groups by increasing the torque on the compressor nut. All turbocharger groups and cartridge groups that have been previously reworked by Caterpillar will have an "X" on the box next to the part number. TEPS Dealers should return all affected turbocharger groups and cartridge groups to their Caterpillar Dealer for rework. Increase the torque on the compressor nut as follows: ... Using an 11/16" 12 point deep socket on the turbine wheel and a 9/16" deep socket with a double universal joint on the compressor nut, remove the compressor nut. (A vise or other stationary fixture should be used to hold the 11/16" socket.) ... With a soft brush or towel, remove any residual thread lock from the nut face of the compressor wheel. ... Apply one drop of 4C4030 or 9S3263 Thread Lock to the shaft threads near the end of the shaft. Using a torque wrench with a double universal joint, install the compressor nut and measure the free-running (shaft free spinning) torque. (Should be approximately 10 lb in) Tighten the compressor nut to 18 +/- 1 lb ft plus the free-running torque (should be approximately 19 lb ft total).
Service Claim Allowances
Submit one claim for all 0R6007, 0R6008, 0R6009, 9Y1286, 9Y1287, and 9Y1288, Turbocharger Groups and 0R6017, 0R6018, 9Y7228, and 9Y7229 Cartridge Groups that have been reworked to increase the torque of the compressor wheel nut. This is a 1-hour job per turbocharger or cartridge group to tighten the compressor wheel nut to the new torque.
