Location of ECM connectorsTest Step 1. Inspect Electrical Connectors and Wiring
Turn the local/remote switch on the control panel to the OFF/RESET position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the allen head screw on each ECM connector for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring are not OK.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Terminating Resistors
Disconnect the connectors for the terminating resistors.
Measure the resistance between terminals A and B on the connectors for the terminating resistors.Expected Result:The resistance is approximately 120 3 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is within the range. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The resistance is not within the range.Repair: Replace the termination resistor if the resistance is not 120 3 Ohms.STOPTest Step 3. Check for a Short Circuit in the Harness
Disconnect the J1/P1 ECM connector and the J2/P2 ECM connector.
Remove the terminating resistors from the harness for the CAN data link.
If a messenger module is installed, disconnect the messenger module.
Disconnect any other modules from the circuit.
Measure the resistance between the following pins:
P1-50 (CAN data link +) and every terminal on ECM connector P1 and ECM connector P2
P1-34 (CAN data link -) and every terminal on ECM connector P1 and ECM connector P2
P1-50 (CAN data link +) and engine groundExpected Result:The resistance indicates an open circuit. Results:
OK - The resistance indicates an open circuit. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - The resistance does not indicate an open circuit.Repair: There is a short in the harness wiring. Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 4. Check for an Open Circuit in the Harness
All connections should remain disconnected.
Fabricate a jumper wire. Short pin F and pin G on the service tool connector.
Measure the resistance between P1-50 (CAN data link +) and P1-34 (CAN data link -) at the ECM connector P1.Expected Result:The resistance indicates a short circuit. Results:
OK - The resistance indicates a short circuit.Repair: The harness for the CAN data link is OK. There may be a problem in the modules that are connected to the CAN data link. Reconnect all connectors and modules to the CAN data link. Connect a spare module in place of one of the modules on the CAN data link. If the diagnostic code disappears, replace the module. If the diagnostic code does not disappear, install the original module. Repeat this step until the problem is found.STOP
Not OK - The resistance does not indicate a short circuit.Repair: There is an open in the harness wiring. Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Make the necessary repairs.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
