Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contamination of the hydraulic system with foreign material will reduce the service life of the hydraulic system components. To prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system, always plug or cap the lines, fittings, or hoses as they are disconnected. Cover any disassembled components and clean them properly before assembly.Clean the hydraulic system properly after any major component exchange or especially after a component failure, to remove any contamination.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not disconnect the air lines until the air pressure in the system is at zero. If hose is disconnected under pressure it can cause personal injury.
Drain the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".
Loosen the purge valves, and release the air pressure in the air tank.
Illustration 1 g00620850
Typical example
Disconnect coolant tube assembly (1) and air hose assembly (2) from the air compressor.
Disconnect oil tube assembly (3) from the air compressor.
Illustration 2 g00928842
Typical example
Remove coolant hose assembly (4) from the air compressor.
Remove nuts (5) that hold the air compressor to the accessory drive.
Remove air compressor (6) from the engine.
Illustration 3 g00929487
Typical example
Remove O-ring seal (7) from the air compressor.Note: Install Tooling (A) to the mounting flange of the air compressor. Tooling (A) will keep the drive gear stationary. The retaining nut for the drive gear can be removed.
Remove retaining nut (8) for the drive gear.
Remove the air compressor drive gear from the air compressor.Installation Procedure

Install the air compressor drive gear onto the shaft of the air compressor.
Illustration 4 g00929487
Typical exampleNote: Install Tooling (A) to the mounting flange of the air compressor. Tooling (A) will keep the drive gear stationary. The retaining nut for the drive gear can be installed.
Install retaining nut (8) for the drive gear. For compressors that have a straight shaft, refer to Step 3 in order to tighten nut (8) . For compressors that have a tapered shaft, refer to Step 4 in order to tighten nut (8) .
Tighten retaining nut (8) to a torque of 460 60 N m (339 44 lb ft).
Tighten nut (8) to a torque of 170 15 N m (125 11 lb ft). Place a driver which is slightly larger than nut (8) over nut (8) and tap the driver with a hammer. Tighten nut (8) again to a torque of 170 15 N m (125 11 lb ft).
Install new O-ring seal (7) on the air compressor.
Position air compressor (6) on the engine.
