Start By:a. drain radiatorFluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Drain the coolant only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap from the radiator slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to avoid personal injury.
1. Remove two bolts (1) and the washers from radiator guard and support (4). Remove five bolts (2), the washers, and cover assembly (3) from radiator guard and support (4). 2. Put Tool (A) in position on upper support assembly (5). Attach a suitable lifting device to Tool (A). Secure the lifting device to a hoist. Remove six bolts (6), the washers, and upper support assembly (5) from radiator guard and support (4). 3. Remove bolt (7) and the washer from each side of top plate (8).4. Remove top plate (8) from radiator guard and support (4). 5. Disconnect wire harness (9) at the electrical connection. Remove two bolts (11), the washers, and back-up alarm assembly (10) from lower support assembly (12). 6. Remove six bolts (13) and the washers from lower support assembly (12). Using two people remove lower support assembly (12) from radiator guard and support (4). 7. Mark and identify two wire harnesses (14) and (15) for installation purposes. Disconnect two wire harness (14) and (15) at the electrical connection. 8. Loosen two hose clamps (18). Disconnect two hoses (20) and (19) from radiator core (21). Remove two bolts (17), the washers, and retainer (16) from the radiator.
Care must be taken when removing radiator core. Avoid making contact with any of the radiator cores during the radiator core removal. Contact made with the other radiator cores may cause component damage.
Gloves should be worn while handling the radiator cores. The corners of the radiator core are sharp. Failure to do so could cause personal injury.
9. Using a pry bar, loosen radiator core (21) from radiator (22). Using two people and gloves remove radiator core (21) from radiator (22). Remove seal (23) from the radiator. The weight of radiator core (21) is 20 Kg (43 lb). 10. Remove spacer (24) from radiator core (21). The following steps are for the installation of the radiator core.11. Make sure all components of the radiator core are clean of dirt and foreign material prior to installation.12. Check all components for wear or damage and replace if necessary. Lubricate the seals prior to installation. 13. Install seal (23) on radiator core (21). Install spacer (24) on radiator core (21).
