Illustration 1 g02367756Schematic diagram of the 4 to 20 mA desired speed inputTest Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Set the engine control to the OFF/RESET position. Note: For the following steps, refer to Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".
Illustration 2 g01393766
Location of the ECM connectors that are related to the 4 to 20 mA desired speed input (typical left front engine view)
(1) J1/P1 ECM connectors
Illustration 3 g01393423
Location of the connectors that are for the 4 to 20 mA desired speed input (typical left rear engine view)
(2) Interface box
(3) Engine interface connector (40 pin)
Thoroughly inspect ECM connectors (1). Also, thoroughly inspect engine interface connector (3) that is mounted on interface box (2).
Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors for the proper torque.

Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the 4 to 20 mA circuit.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for pinch points between the device that supplies the 4 to 20 mA signal and the ECM. Expected Result:All of the connectors, pins, and sockets are connected properly. The connectors and the wiring do not have corrosion, abrasion, or pinch points. Results:
OK - The components are in good condition with proper connections. If you are troubleshooting a 524-3 diagnostic code, proceed to Test Step 2. If you are troubleshooting a 524-4 diagnostic code, proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The components are not in good condition and/or at least one connection is improper.Repair: Perform the necessary repairs and/or replace parts, if necessary.STOPTest Step 2. Check for an Open Circuit at the Speed Control
Remove the two wires ("+" and "-") for the 4 to 20 mA signal from the device that supplies the 4 to 20 mA signal.
Install a jumper wire between the two wires ("+" and "-") that were removed from the device that supplies the 4 to 20 mA signal.
Disconnect the P1 ECM connector.
Measure the resistance between terminals P1-36 and P1-37. Expected Result:Continuity will be measured for a circuit that is in good repair. Results:
OK - The circuit is continuous. The wiring harness does not have an open circuit.Repair: Remove the jumper wire. Insulate the wire leads with electrical tape in order to ensure that the leads do not create a short circuit.Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The circuit is not continuous. There is an open circuit in a connector and/or in the harness between the ECM and the speed control.Repair: The problem may be between the P1 connector and the engine interface connector. Alternatively, the problem may be between the engine interface connector and the speed control.Repair the connection and/or the wire, when possible. Replace parts, if necessary. Verify that the problem is resolved.STOPTest Step 3. Check for a Short to +Battery in the Speed Control Device
Verify that the engine control is in the OFF/RESET position.
Ensure that there is no electrical power to the device that provides the 4 to 20 mA signal.
Measure the resistance between terminals P1-36 and P1-57 at the ECM connector. Expected Result:The circuit does not measure continuity between the terminals. Results:
OK - The circuit is not continuous. The wires are not shorted in the harness The wiring from terminal P1-36 is not shorted to the +Battery. Do not reconnect any connectors. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - Continuity is measured between the terminals. There is a short circuit in a connection and/or the wiring between the ECM and the speed control.Repair: Repair the connection and/or the wire, when possible. Replace parts, if necessary. Verify that the problem is resolved.STOPTest Step 4. Check for a Shorted Signal Wire to the +Battery in the Harness
Verify that the engine control is in the OFF/RESET position.
Confirm that there is no electrical power to the devic
