before making any tests. The following publications and information are available from Caterpillar for Sea Trial Measurements:Introduction (Conditions for tests) Form SMHS7393 (Formerly GMG02354)D399, D398, D379 Form SMHS7395 (Formerly GMG02433)D349, D348, D346 Form SMHS7396 (Formerly GMG02434)D353 Form SMHS7397 (Formerly GMG02435)3408, 3412 Form SMHS7401 (New)3406 Form SMHS7402 (Formerly GMG02439)3306, 3304 Form SMHS7403 (Formerly GMG02440)3208 Form SMHS7404 (Formerly GMG02441)Caterpillar Marine Installation Information 40-684-82853Seal Trial Measurements of Caterpillar Marine Engines Engine Division - Engine Data Sheet 107 Form LEHM9182Technical Information File Marine Engine Sea Trial Data Fiche 226The reference material in the above list gives the information needed at the time that sea trials are made. Information given in these reference materials are: Conditions needed during the tests; normal, maximum or minimum values expected; illustrations that show the locations to make the tests. The numbers that follow the test locations are the same as those shown on the Caterpillar Marine Installation form, and on the general dimension drawings. Temperature and pressure tests must be taken at conditions that are typical of full load operation for the unit after engine temperature and pressure values are stationary.(1) Governor Rack Setting: See the Service Manual(2) Crankshaft Deflection (909): Take the deflection measurement at the center throw of the crankshaft before the engine is started. Refer to the Caterpillar Marine Engine Application and Installation Guide LE021575. This test is needed only on D399, D398, D349, and D348 Engines.(3) Voltage: Take this reading on the electric set from the vessel's instrument panel or from a voltmeter with all the switches on the vessel closed.(4) Amperage: Take this reading on the electric set from the vessel's instrument panel or from an ammeter with all the switches on the vessel closed.(5) Auxiliary Water Circuit-Pump Inlet Pressure (904): Take this measurement at the auxiliary water pump inlet with a pressure gauge like the gauge in the 4S6553 Instrument Group. The instrument used to take this measurement should show whether the reading is pressure or vacuum.(6) Auxiliary Water Circuit-Engine Outlet Pressure (905): Take this measurement at the engine outlet of the auxiliary water circuit with a pressure gauge like the 9S7370 Tetragauge Group. The instrument used to take this measurement should show whether the reading is pressure or vacuum.(7) Ambient Air Temperature: Measure the air temperature in a shaded area on the main deck of the vessel; use a thermometer like the 6H3050.(8) Ambient Sea Water Temperature: Measure the sea water temperature at the water depth of the sea water inlets or keel coolers; use a thermometer like the 6H3050.(9) Air Temperature at Engine Room Overhead: All hatches and doors must be closed with the vessel ready for bad weather. Measure the air temperature above the engine with a thermometer like the 6H3050.(10) Jacket Water Outlet Temperature (901): Take this measurement at the outlet of the jacket water circuit with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group.(11) Jacket Water Pump Outlet Temperature (902): Take this measurement at the jacket water pump with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group.(12) Intake Manifold Temperature (906): Take the measurement of the air temperature in the intake manifold between the aftercooler and the cylinder head, with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group.(13) Intake Manifold Pressure (911): Take the measurement of the air pressure in the intake manifold with a pressure gauge like the gauge in the 4S6553 Instrument Group.(14) Air Inlet Restriction (907): All hatches and doors must be closed with the vessel ready for bad weather. The unit must have a clean air cleaner element. Take the measurement of the air pressure with a pressure gauge like the gauge in the 4S6553 Instrument Group. On naturally-aspirated engines, the measurement can be taken at the intake manifold or at the clean side of the air cleaner. On engines with a turbocharger, the measurement must be taken between the air cleaner and the turbocharger.(15) Air Cleaner Outlet Temperature (930): All hatches and doors must be closed, with the vessel ready for bad weather. Take the measurement of the air temperature at the air cleaner, with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group.(16) Exhaust Stack Pressure (908): Take the measurement of the air pressure in the exhaust elbow outlet, with a pressure gauge such as the 9S7370 Tetragauge Group.(17) Exhaust Stack Temperature (912): Take the measurement of the air temperature in the exhaust elbow, with a pyrometer like the 1P3060 Pyrometer Group.(18) Aftercooler Water Inlet Temperature (903): Take the measurement of the temperature of the water going into aftercooler, with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group. The permissible engine horsepower rating is in relation to the aftercooler water inlet temperature on SCAC (separate circuit aftercooled) engines. The 110°F (43°C) SCAC horsepower rating must be used if the SCAC aftercooler water inlet temperature is higher than 85°F (29°C).(19) Engine Oil Temperature (913): Take the measurement of engine oil temperature from the instrument panel or after the oil cooler and filters, with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group.(20) Engine Oil Pressure (914): Take the measurement of the engine oil pressure from the instrument panel or after the oil cooler and filters, with a pressure gauge like the 9S7370 Tetragauge Group.(21) Marine Gear Oil Temperature (915): Take the measurement of the marine gear oil temperature on the outlet side of the marine gear oil cooler, with a temperature gauge like the 9S9102 Thermistor Thermometer Group.(22) Marine Gear Oil Pressure (916): Take the measurement of the marine gear oil pressure on the outlet side of the marine gear oil cooler, with a pressure gauge like the 9S7370 Tetragauge Group.(23) Fuel Pressure (917): Take the measurement of the fuel pressure between the fuel filter and the fuel injection pump, with a pressure gauge like the 9S7370 Tetragauge Group.(24) Minimum Engine RPM During Emergency Reversal (916): Take this measurement from the instrument panel, with the tachometer in the 4S6553 Instrument Group or with a tachometer of 2% accuracy. Emergency reverse is done at top speed with the
