Schematic for service brake pedal position (switch 2)
Test Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Illustration 2 g01186024
Location of the J1/P1 ECM connectors (typical left side engine view)
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector and the firewall bulkhead connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, " Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.

(P1-64) Service brake pedal position (switch 2)
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the switch.
Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the switch to the ECM. Expected Result:All connectors, pins and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and connectors appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Switch Status on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)
Table 2
Status of the Service Brake Pedal Position (Switch 2)
Switch Position or Pedal Position Switch Status Circuit
The service brake is depressed. "ON" Shorted
The service brake is released. "OFF" Open
Access the status screen on Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Ensure that the air system is charged if the vehicle is equipped with air brakes. Start the engine, if necessary.
Depress the service brake while the status of both brake switches is being observed on Cat ET.
Release the service brake while the status of both brake switches is being observed on Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Note: If the status for the service brake pedal position (switch 2) indicates "Not Installed", program the parameter for the "Transmission Style". The "Transmission Style" parameter must be programmed to Automatic Option 2 or Automatic Option 3 if a second brake pedal switch is used.Expected Result:The switch status changes per the information in Table 2.Results:
OK - The switch status changes correctly.Repair: The switch is operating normally. Ensure that the service brake pedal position (switch 1) is functioning correctly. Perform the following diagnostic procedure:Troubleshooting, "Service Brake Pedal Position (Switch 1) Circuit - Test".STOP
Not OK - The switch status does not change correctly. The ECM is not reading the switch status change. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Create an Open Circuit and a Short Circuit at the Switch
Fabricate a jumper wire that is long enough to create a short circuit across the terminals at the harness connector for the service brake pedal position (switch 2).
Disconnect the switch from the harness.
Install the jumper wire across the two switch terminals at the harness connector for the service brake pedal position (switch 2).
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the "Service Brake Pedal Position (Switch 2)". While the status for the "Service Brake Pedal Position (Switch 2)" is monitored, remove the jumper wire and then restore the jumper wire. The correct status for the "Service Brake Pedal Position (Switch 2)" is "On" when the jumper wire is connected. The correct status for the "Service Brake Pedal Position (Switch 2)" is "Off" when the jumper wire is removed.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Expected Result:Cat ET is rep
