Information:

Using the Throttle Backup/Diagnostic Enable Switch And Check Engine Lamp to Display ("Flash" type) ACTIVE Codes:
A. Turn key ON (engine does not need to be started to view codes). Push the Throttle Backup/Diagnostic Enable Switch down and release it.B. If the lamp was not on (no ACTIVE Diagnostics present), the Check Engine Lamp will flash a Code 55 - no Diagnostics present. If the lamp was ON (ACTIVE Diagnostic present) then it will stay on for five seconds more and then the lamp will begin to flash the first number of the two-digit code (count the flashes). After one second OFF, it will begin to flash the second digit. If two or more codes are present, they will follow the first after three seconds and be displayed in the same manner. The Check Engine Lamp will flash out all the codes that are currently active.ACTIVE Diagnostic Codes
Diagnostic codes are used by the 3508 EUI system to warn the vehicle operator of a problem and indicate to the service technician the nature of the problem. Some codes are used only to record an event, and do not indicate problems. An ACTIVE Diagnostic code represents a problem that should be investigated and corrected AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Repairing the cause of an ACTIVE code will cause the code to be cleared. When an ACTIVE code is generated, the Check Engine Lamp will turn ON and remain ON for at least five seconds. If the condition generating the Diagnostic occurs only for a brief moment, the lamp will go OFF after five seconds and the Diagnostic will be LOGGED.To troubleshoot an ACTIVE code, refer to the cross-reference table in this section under the specific Diagnostic CID-FMI code number. The code number will direct you to a procedure in Section 5.3500 EUI: ECAP "Display Diagnostics" Screen
Figure 4.0LOGGED Diagnostic Codes
When the ECM generates a diagnostic code, it usually logs the code in permanent memory within the ECM. The ECM has an internal diagnostic clock and will record the hour of the first occurrence, the hour of the last occurrence and the number of occurrences of the event. Knowing when and how often the code was generated can be a valuable indicator when troubleshooting intermittent problems. Logged codes can be retrieved or erased using an ECAP service tool (Figure 4.0).Those logged diagnostic codes will automatically be deleted if no additional occurrences are recorded in 100 hours. When investigating logged diagnostic codes, keep in mind:* Some codes may be sensitive, and may log occurrences that did not result in operator complaints. If the time the code was logged does NOT correlate to a complaint, there may be nothing to fix.* The most likely cause of an intermittent problem is a faulty connection or damaged wiring. Next likely is a component failure (sensor or switch for instance). Least likely is failure of the ECM itself.* Diagnostic Codes that are logged repeatedly may indicate a problem that needs special investigation. Codes that are logged only a few times and do not result in operator complaints, may not need repair. To troubleshoot a Logged Diagnostic Code, first refer to the cross-reference table in this section under the specific code number. The code number will direct you to a procedure in Section 5. If the symptoms continue, use the procedure for troubleshooting SYMPTOMS (see Section 3, Troubleshooting Without A Diagnostic Code).Always clear LOGGED codes after investigating and correcting the problem which generated the code.3500 EUI: ECAP "Display Events" Screen
(Figure 4.1)Diagnostic Terminology
Component Identifier (CID) Two or three digit code which is assigned to each component or system.Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) Type of failure the component experienced (adopted from SAE standard practice J1587 diagnostics).Flash Code Caterpillar proprietary diagnostic code set used with the Check Engine Lamp and Diagnostic Enable Switch. Check Engine Lamp The Diagnostic causes the bulb to turn on when it is active and blinks out Flash Codes when the Diagnostic Enable Switch is used.Active The CID and FMI can be sent through the CAT data link to the Communication Adapter tool then to the ECAP Tool or flashed by the Check Engine Lamp on the Dash Panel when the Diagnostic is Active.Logged The Diagnostic will be entered into the permanent memory Diagnostic log when it becomes active. The number of occurrences will be saved in the good to bad counter in the permanent memory Diagnostic log. First and last occurrence time will be saved into the permanent memory Diagnostic log also. The listing below is arranged in ascending CID-FMI order. Another listing follows in ascending FLASH CODE order.Diagnostic Codes Cross-Reference to Electronic Subsystem Functional Tests (Section5):
