Information:
This Program must be administered as soon as possible. When reporting the repair, use "PI1395" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description Code. Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI1395" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
This Revised Service Letter replaces the December 1, 1998 (Revised June 1999) Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Flash File Table in the Rework Procedure.
Problem
An engine shutdown triggered by the Engine Monitoring and Protection System can not be overridden, by placing the 'Emergency Override Switch' in the on position, in engines with personality modules listed in this service letter. This feature is required by certain marine certification societies. New personality modules have been released to correct this problem.

Rework Procedure
The initial release of this letter contained software that corrected the Engine Protection Override Switch (EPOS) issue. Since then, several other improvements have been added to the software. This service letter has been revised to allow customers to receive the new improvements as well as the EPOS solution that the letter was originally written to address. This revised letter should not be applied to an engine that has already had PI1395 preformed.
Procedure
Tools Needed
7X1701 - Caterpillar Communication Adapter7X1425 - Cable Assembly (PC to Communication Adapter)139-4166 - Cable Assembly (Unicable connecting Communication Adapter to Engine) - PC capable of running Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) software version 2.0 or later 1. Refer to the Parts Needed section of this letter to determine which software needs to be flashed into the ECM. Obtain this software from the Caterpillar Mailbox System or the SIS FLASH FILES CD. The SIS FLASH FILES CD may take up to two months to receive the most up to date files. The mailbox system always has the latest software. If you are not set up to use the mailbox call 1-800-HELP EDI or 309-735-4334 from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Central (Peoria) Time for assistance. Be prepared to leave your name, mailing address, dealer code, and phone number. A PC, error correcting modem, and HyperAccess 5 for Dos form number LERQ3133 are required to use the mailbox system. The time required to receive access to the mailbox system can vary widely depending on the workload of the administrators. Be sure to request access to this system well before you need it.
2. Flash the new software for the primary and backup ECMs into the corresponding ECMs.3. Check engine for proper operation.Refer to the table below to determine the correct flash files for your engine.
