Removal

No repair or service is possible on an oil filter. Install a new oil filter.Installation
IMPORTANT: Be sure gasket is seated properly in base of filter.Put a thin coat of clean engine oil on gasket. IMPORTANT: Do not over tighten filter.Turn oil filter clockwise on oil filter nipple until the gasket just touches the mounting base. Turn the oil filter 1/2 to 3/4 turns clockwise by hand.Oil Filter Nipple
Removal
3-164D, 3-179D, 4-219D, 4-239D, 4-239T, 6-329D, 6-359D, and 6-359T Engines.
Remove oil filter (Group 0407).Remove oil cooler, if equipped, (Group 0419).

Remove oil filter (Group 0407).

Install a new oil filter nipple if the old one is damaged.Installation

Fig. 4-Oil HolePut the oil filter nipple over its bore in the cylinder block. Turn the oil filter nipple so the oil hole (Fig. 4) is as low as possible.

Turn the oil filter nipple clockwise into the oil filter adapter. Tighten oil filter nipple securely.Install oil filter (Group 0407).Oil Pan
Removal
Drain engine oil.

Inspect oil pan for cracks and dents. Repair or replace damaged oil pan.Installation
Using a new gasket, put oil pan in position on cylinder block. Install cap screws through oil pan into cylinder block.Tighten oil pan cap screws to 35 lb-ft (47 N m) (5 kg-m).Fill engine with proper oil to proper level.Oil Bypass Valve
3-179D Engine and later 3-164D, 4-219D, 4-239D, 4-239T, 6-329D, 6-359D, and 6-359T Engines
Removal
Remove timing gear cover and front plate (Group 0402).

Inspect oil bypass valve for damage. Install a new valve if there is damage.Use D-01168AA Spring Compression Testor to check oil bypass valve spring. Spring length must be 1.34 in. (34 mm) when compressed with 23 2.3 lb. force (101 10 N). If length is not correct, install a new spring.Installation
Install bypass valve and spring (Fig. 6A).Install front plate, timing gear train, and timing gear cover (Group 0402).Oil Pressure Control Valve

Removal
Fig. 7-Oil Pressure Control valveTurn plug (1, Fig. 7) counterclockwise out of timing gear cover. The plug is spring loaded.Count aluminum washers (2) and shims (3) as they are removed from plug.Lift spring (4) and valve (5) out of timing gear cover.Inspect valve seat, in cylinder block behind timing gear cover, through the plug hole. If valve seat is damaged replace it.

IMPORTANT: Do not push against raised inner rim of valve seat.
Fig. 10-JD248-A Bushing DriverUsing JD248A Bushing Driver (Fig. 10), push valve seat into cylinder block. Push valve seat in until recessed edge of valve seat is flush with bottom of counterbore in cylinder block.
Fig. 11-Oil Pressure Control ValvePut valve (5, Fig. 11) and spring (4) together. Put them in timing gear cover.Put aluminum washer (2) on plug so that raised center contacts head of plug. Put shims in plug. Use same number of shims and aluminum washers as were removed.Put plug over end of spring. Compress spring until plug contacts timing gear cover. Turn plug clockwise into timing gear cover. Tighten plug.

Removal
Remove oil cooler (Group 0419).

Fig. 13-Compress SpringUsing a punch, or screwdriver (1, Fig. 13), compress the spring by pushing against the piston. While the spring is compressed, insert a 0.31 inch (8 mm) diameter or smaller pin punch or rod (2) through the 0.31 inch (8 mm) holes in the housing. Release piston.
Fig. 14-Remove Spring PinSelect a 0.12 inch (3 mm) diameter or smaller pin punch (1, Fig. 14) and push spring pin out of housing (2).
