Problem
The 7W3797 Camshaft Assemblies used in some of the Affected Product may not provide acceptable service life. The valve train camshaft may break at the seat of the cam gear.
Affected Product
Model Identification Number 3406B Truck Engine 7FB1 - 72555
Parts Needed
1 - 7W3797 Camshaft Assembly Any parts damaged as a result of the camshaft failure.
Action Required
If there is a failure of a valve train camshaft, inspect the following components and replace as necessary. 1. Replace the broken camshaft and gear assembly using a new 7W3797 Camshaft Assembly. 2. Inspect the front camshaft bushing for damage. 3. Inspect for edge loading or pitting of the timing (idler) gear, timing advance gear or accessory drive (idler) gear. 4. Inspect for loose idler gear stub shaft bolts/nuts. 5. Check for broken valve train components such as rotocoils, rocker arms, bridges, bridge dowels, shafts, stands, valve guides, valve seats. 6. Check for loose pins/wire in the lifter assemblies. 7. Inspect for bent push rods and valves. Note: Replace the lifter assembly if either the valves or push rods have been bent because of the valve train components coming in contact with the pistons. This will eliminate any possibility that the lifter assembly may have a loose pin. 8. Check the pistons for damage. See the Guideline For Reusable Parts, Form SEBF8049, Page 13, to determine piston reusability. WARRANTY ALLOWANCES Caterpillar Dealer Suggested Customer Suggested Parts Labor Hrs. Parts Labor Hrs.
