Information:

2. On precombustion engines only, disconnect wire (2) from valve cover base (1). Remove the glow plug harness from the cylinder head.3. Remove valve cover base (1). 4. Remove three bolts (5) from the water elbow. Remove elbow (3), coupling (4) and elbow (6).5. Remove lifting bracket (7). 6. Remove the bolt from automatic timing advance housing to bracket (8). Remove bracket (8) and bracket (9). Remove the remainder of the 3/8" head bolts.
Typical Example7. Install three 5/16" -18 NC forged eyebolts or two 5P8700 Lifting Brackets in the cylinder head assembly. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder head. When available, use two 5P8700 Lifting Brackets and four S1618 Bolts (5/16"-18 NC × 1 in. long) to remove the cylinder head. These are especially designed for when overhead clearance is a problem.8. Remove cylinder head bolts (10). Remove cylinder head assembly. Weight of the head assembly is 90.7 kg (200 lb.).
Do not put the cylinder head down on a flat surface. Damage to the fuel nozzles will result.
A new spacer plate gasket must be installed when the cylinder head assembly is removed. See Remove And Install Spacer Plate.
Install Cylinder Head Assemblies
Typical Example1. Thoroughly clean the spacer plates and bottom surface of the cylinder head assemblies. Install a new head gasket and seals (1). Do not use any adhesives. When available, use two 5P8700 Lifting Brackets and four S1618 bolts (5/16"-18 NC × 1 in. long) to install the cylinder head. These are especially designed for when overhead clearance is a problem.
A new spacer plate gasket must be installed when the cylinder head assembly is removed. See Remove And Install Spacer Plate.
2. Put the cylinder head assembly into position on the spacer plate. The use of guide bolts will help to put the cylinder head assembly in alignment with the spacer plate. 3. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of all the cylinder head bolts. Install cylinder head bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts in the following sequence.a. Tighten bolts 1 through 14 in number sequence to a torque of 270 25 N m (200 20 lb.ft.).b. Tighten bolts 1 through 14 in number sequence to a torque of 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.).c. Tighten bolts 1 through 14 in number sequence to a torque of 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.). 4. On precombustion chamber engines only, install glow plug harness (2).5. Put the rocker shaft assembly (3) in position on the cylinder head assembly. Put 2P2506 Thread Lubricant on the threads of bolts (4) through (7). Install bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts as follows:a. Tighten bolts (4) through (7) in number sequence to a torque of 270 25 N m (200 20 lb.ft.).b. Tighten bolts (4) through (7) in number sequence to a torque of 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.).c. Tighten bolts (4) through (7) in number sequence again to a torque of 447 20 N m (330 15 lb.ft.). 6. Install bracket (12) and spacer (11). Tighten bolts (8) finger tight. Tighten the bolt that holds the automatic timing advance housing to bracket (12) to standard torque. Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.).7. Install bracket (10), and tighten bolts (13) finger tight. Tighten bolts (9) to standard torque. Tighten bolts (13) to a torque of 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.).8. Tighten the remainder of the 3/8" head bolts to a torque of 43 7 N m (32 5 lb.ft.). If the studs for the exhaust manifold were removed, install new studs, and tighten them to a torque of 27 4 N m (20 3 lb.ft.). 9. Put clean engine oil on bridge dowels (20). Install valve bridges (17) in their respective locations on the cylinder head.10. Put clean engine oil on the valve bridges. Connect rocker arms (21) and push rods (18) with tool (A).Use the following procedure to adjust the bridges.a. Put clean SAE 40 engine oil in the lubrication passage of the bridge.b. Back off the adjusting screw. Press straight down on the top contact surface of the bridge with a force of 40 to 60 N (9 to 13 lb.).c. Turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the oil film in the lubrication passage of the valve bridge moves inward, indicating the adjusting screw has made contact with the valve stem.d. Turn the screw an additional 15° to 25° (1/3 of a flat on the hex nut), to equalizer clearance with the dowel.e. Hold the adjusting screw in this position, and tighten the locknut to a torque of 85 to 115 N m (65 to 85 lb.ft.).11. Adjust the valves to have a clearance of .015 in. (0.38 mm) for intake and .030 in. (0.76 mm) for exhaust. See Valve Clearance Setting in Testing And Adjusting. 12. Install the valve cover base on the cylinder head assembly. Tighten base bolts in the number sequence shown.13. On earlier engines, install fuel line adapters (19) and locks (14). Connect fuel lines (15), and tighten the nuts to a torque of 40 7 N m (30 5 lb.ft.) with tool (B).14. Install fuel lines (16). On later engines, tighten the nut that fastens fuel line (16) to the valve cover base to a torque of 30 5 N m (22 4 lb.ft.). Tighten the fuel line nuts to a torque of 30 5 lb.ft. (40 7 N m) with tool (B).END BY:a. install valve coversb. install exhaust manifolds
