Information:
Earlier 3408 Marine Engine
Later 3408 Marine Engine
Earlier 3412 Marine Engine
Later 3412 Marine Engine Photos show the minor differences between the (Earlier) and (Later) Engines such as the location of the Electronic Control Module (ECM), vacuum limiter filter reposition, etc.Start By:a. remove air cleaner assemblyb. remove valve cover and basec. remove rocker shaft assembly 1. Remove two bolts (2).2. Remove two bolts (1) and remove tube assembly (3). 3. Disconnect line (5).4. Loosen clamp (6).5. Remove four bolts (7). Remove air separator (4).6. Remove two bolts (8) and remove the water tube assembly. 7. Remove two bolts (9).8. Remove tube assembly (12).9. Remove the turbocharger oil supply line (10).10. Remove bolts and nuts (13).11. Remove nuts and washers (11). Use two people to remove the exhaust manifold.
Typical Example12. Attach Tool (A).13. Remove twenty bolts (14) and the cylinder head. The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 172 kg (380 lb) for the 3412 Engine and 90 kg (198 lb) for the 3408 Engine.
Do not put the cylinder head down on a flat surface. Direct injection nozzles extend out from the bottom surface of the cylinder head and will be damaged by the weight of the head.
Install Cylinder Head
1. Thoroughly clean the bottom surface of the cylinder head. Install a new head gasket and water seals. Do not use any adhesives. A new spacer plate gasket must be used when the cylinder head is installed. See the topic, "Remove & Install Spacer Plate", in this Manual.
Typical Example2. Attach Tool (D).3. Install the cylinder head to the block. The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 172 kg (380 lb) for the 3412 Engine and 90 kg (198 lb) for the 3408 Engine.4. Put clean engine oil on the threads of all the cylinder head bolts. Install cylinder head bolts (14). Do not tighten at this time.
3408 tightening sequence
3412 tightening sequence5. Use the tightening sequence below to tighten the bolts that hold the cylinder head in position for the 3408 and the 3412 marine engines. a. Tighten cylinder head bolts (14) 1 through 10 for the 3408 and 1 through 14 for the 3412 in the proper sequence to 270 25 N m (200 20 lb ft).b. Tighten cylinder head bolts (14) in sequence to 470 20 N m (345 15 lb ft).c. Do Step 5b again to insure the proper torque.d. Tighten cylinder head bolts (14) 11 through 16 for the 3408 and 15 through 26 for the 3412 in the proper sequence to 270 25 N m (200 20 lb ft).e. Tighten cylinder head bolts (14) in sequence to 450 20 N m (330 15 lb ft).f. Do Step 5e again to insure the proper torque. 6. Use two people to place exhaust manifold in position. Install nuts and washers (11). See the topic, "Remove & Install Exhaust Manifold", for the proper torque and sequence for the exhaust manifold nuts in this Manual.7. Install bolts and nuts (13).8. Install the turbocharger oil supply line (10).9. Install tube assembly (12).10. Install two bolts (9). 11. Install the water tube assembly. Install two bolts (8).12. Install air separator (4). Install four bolts (7).13. Install hose and tighten clamp (6).14. Connect line (5). 15. Install tube assembly (3) and install two bolts (1).16. Install two bolts (2).End By:a. install rocker shaft assemblyb. install valve cover and basec. install air cleaner assembly
