Information:
Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
There have been instances of E1309 - NOx Conversion is Low event code followed by E1389 - Aftertreatment #1 SCR Operator Inducement with engine derates. Following Troubleshooting, NOx Conversion Is Low will usually clear the E1309 code without identifying any component failure. Once the machine has been working, the E1309 code will reoccur leading to further troubleshooting with no component failure identified. There have been instances where the troubleshooting procedure has been performed and led to incorrect diagnosis and replacement of components. Several Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system diagnostic or event codes may have been active or logged, leading to a level 3 inducement, and idle lock.

3516-12 3100-12 Aftertreatment 1 Diesel Exhaust Fluid Concentration : Failure The DEF concentration cannot be determined. The engine warning lamp will come on.
3516-16 E1365 (2) Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : High - moderate severity (2) The DEF has a high concentration.
3516-18 E1364 (2) Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Low - moderate severity (2) The DEF has a low concentration
7105-31 E1585 (2) Aftertreatment #1 Inconsistent Configuration Detected Data received from the NOc sensor is not compatible with the engine software. Table 1 lists the diagnostic or event codes that may have occurred during the current key cycle or through successive key cycles, which have resulted in the level 3 inducement event.Solution
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.

5298-17 2180-1 During troubleshooting of a certain code, other codes may become active or logged because of the troubleshooting steps, tripping the anti-tampering element of the diagnostics. Clear these codes after completion of the troubleshooting and only perform troubleshooting if a code has become persistent.Caterpillar is investigating the root cause of these issues. To support the investigation, Caterpillar is requesting that the following steps are completed, documented, and recorded in Service Information Management System (SIMSi) - CPI Feedback.During troubleshooting, refer to the Electrical Schematic for the application.Inspect all harness connections before any component is replaced. If these connections are not clean and secure, continuous electrical faults or intermittent electrical faults can occur. Check that the wires are pushed into the connections completely. Make sure that the connections are tight before other tests are performed.Failure of an electrical component may cause the failure of other components. Always attempt to correct the cause of an electrical failure before you replace a component. If wire insulation is punctured, repair the damage. Seal the damaged wires with 8T-0065 Silicone Sealant. Cover the sealant with two layers of 1P-0810 Electrical Tape.General Points:
The purpose of this document is to provide improved technical support and data capture through Dealer Solutions Network (DSN)/CPI Issue or other remote support.
If the procedure in this Technical Information Bulletin (TIB) has been performed on the machine previously, with the required CPI feedback provided to Caterpillar, proceed straight to Test Step 13.
Always check the latest troubleshooting information on SIS Web.
Provide feedback requested to enable the investigating team capture data related to this issue.
Address E1389 - Aftertreatment SCR Inducement event codes after troubleshooting other active or logged codes first.
Follow the Test Steps as directed by the results of each step.Troubleshooting Steps
