Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Drain the engine oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

Note: Do not pry or gouge the sealing surface of the engine oil pan. Tap the engine oil pan with a rubber mallet in order to remove the engine oil pan.
Remove oil level gauge (3). Remove bolts (2) from engine oil pan (1). Remove engine oil pan (1) .
Remove the oil pan gasket from engine oil pan (1) .Installation Procedure

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Inspect the condition of the gasket. Replace the gasket, if necessary.

Typical bottom view
Clean the mating surface of the engine oil pan and the cylinder block. Apply Tooling (A) to four areas on the sealing surface of the oil pan. The areas are marked Location (Y). The areas are at the corners of the oil pan in the following locations:
connecting joint of the front housing and the front of the cylinder block
connecting joint of the flywheel housing and the rear of the cylinder block
Place a new oil pan gasket and engine oil pan (1) on the cylinder block.
Tighten four oil pan Bolts (X) .
Start with Bolt (Z) and tighten all remaining bolts in a counterclockwise sequence.
Tighten the bolts to the following torque 31 1 N m (23 1 lb ft).
Start again with Bolt (Z) and tighten all remaining bolts in a counterclockwise sequence.
Tighten the bolts to the following torque 31 1 N m (23 1 lb ft).

Install oil level gauge (3) .
Fill the engine with oil to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure.End By: Install the bottom guards. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bottom Guard - Install ".
