Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Lines for the Ground Level Fill
A. Inspect the DEF lines between the ground level fill and the DEF tank for the following:
- Leaks
- Tight bends or kinks
- Correct routing
DEF Lines
Result: The ground level fill lines are routed correctly and there are no issues.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: There were problems found with the DEF ground level fill lines.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check the DEF Line Heater #5 Circuit for an Open Circuit
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Allow 2 minutes to elapse before proceeding.
B. Disconnect the following components from the wiring harness connector:
- Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) ground level fill receiver heater
- SCR ground level fill line heater
- SCR ground level fill valve heater
C. Measure the resistance between Pin 1 and Pin 2 on each of the line heater connectors:
- The SCR ground level fill receiver heater should measure 18 ohms +/- 2 ohms.
- The SCR ground level fill line heater should measure 11 ohms +/- 2 ohms.
- The SCR ground level fill valve heater should measure 18 +/- 2 ohms.
Resistance
Result: The resistance measurements were all within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The resistance measurements were not within specification for one or more of the heaters.
Repair: A failed heater circuit has been detected. Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Perform a "DEF Line Heater #5 State" override to verify the repair. Return to service.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check the DEF Tank Vent line
A. Inspect the DEF tank vent line for the following:
- Leaks
- Tight bends or kinks
- Correct routing
B. Inspect the DEF filler cap on the DEF tank for blockages.
DEF Vent
Result: The DEF tank vent line and filler cap are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The DEF tank vent line and filler cap are NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the damaged vent line and cap.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the DEF Ground Level Fill Valve
A. Inspect the DEF tank vent line for the following:
- Leaks
- Tight bends or kinks
- Correct routing
B. Inspect the DEF filler cap on the DEF tank for blockages.
DEF Fill Valve
Result: The DEF tank ground level fill valve is OK.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The DEF tank ground level fill valve is NOT OK.
Repair: Replace the DEF tank ground level fill valve.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
