Information:

1. Remove suction bell (3) and tubes, oil supply tube (2) and BrakeSaver oil supply tube (1) from the engine block and oil pump. 2. Remove three bolts (5) and oil pump (4) from the engine. The following steps are for installation of the oil pump.3. Put oil pump (4) in position on the engine. Make sure the oil pump gear is engaged with the crankshaft gear, and install three bolts (5) that hold the oil pump.4. Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seals on the oil tubes.5. Install suction bell (3) and tubes, oil supply tube (2) and the BrakeSaver oil supply tube (1).End By:a. install oil pan (BrakeSaver)Disassemble Oil Pump (BrakeSaver)
Start By:a. remove oil pump (BrakeSaver) 1. Remove the bolt and washer that hold drive gear (1) on the shaft.2. Use tooling (A) to remove drive gear (1) from the shaft. Remove the key from the shaft. Put alignment marks on the pump bodies so they can be assembled in the correct position. 3. Remove retainer (3) for the bypass valve. Remove the spring and bypass valve.4. Remove bolts (4) that hold pump body (2) to the main pump body. Remove pump body (2).5. Use tooling (B) to remove the bearings from pump body (2). 6. Remove gears (7). Put identification marks on the gears so they can be assembled in the same position.7. Remove spacer (6) from main oil pump body (5). Use tooling (B) to remove the bearings from spacer (6).8. Remove the gears from main oil pump body (5). 9. Use tooling (B) to remove the bearings from the main oil pump body.Assemble Oil Pump (BrakeSaver)
1. Use tooling (B) to install bearings (8) until they are even with the outside surface of main oil pump body (5). Install bearings (8) so the joints in the bearings are 30° 15° from the center line of the bearing bores and toward the oil pump outlet passage as shown. 2. Use tooling (B) to install bearings (9) in the spacer. Install the bearings until they are in position an equal distance in from each side of the pacer. Install the bearings with the oil holes in the bearings in alignment with the oil holes in the spacer and the joints in the bearings in alignment with the cavity on the spacer as shown. 3. Put clean engine oil on all the gears and bearings before they are assembled in the oil pump. Install idler and drive gears (10) in the main oil pump body.4. Install spacer (6) on the gear shafts with the smaller cavity out and the oil holes in the spacer toward the pump outlet passage as shown. 5. Use tooling (B) to install bearings (11) in pump body (2) until they are 1.52 0.25 mm (.060 .010 in.) from the inside edge of the bearing ores. Install the bearings so the joints in the bearings are 30° 15° from the center line of the bearing bores and toward the outlet passage The outlet passage has a cavity between the bearing bores. 6. Install pump gears (7) on the oil pump shafts in their original position.7. Install pump body (2). Install bypass valve (12) spring (13) and retainer (3).8. Install the key on the shaft. 9. Install gear (1) on the shaft. Install the washer and bolt that hold he gear on the shaft. Be sure the pump turns freely after assembly.End By:a. install oil pump (BrakeSaver) Jacobs Engine Brake [If So Equipped]Remove Jacobs Engine Brake
Start By:a. remove valve covers 1. Disconnect solenoid lead wires (1) and (3) from the terminal in the Jacobs spacer.2. Remove eight Jacobs nuts (2) and four jacobs bolts that hold the Jacobs spacers to the valve cover bases. Remove Jacobs spacers (4). Do Steps 3 through 10 for each end of the engine. The front half of the engine is shown.3. Remove four Jacobs studs (5) and Jacobs washers. Remove three bolts (6) and remove valve cover base (7). 4. Remove Jacobs nuts (8), Jacobs washers, Jacobs bolts (9), and the Jacobs washers that hold the Jacobs brake housing assembly in place.5. Remove Jacobs brake housing assembly (10). The Jacobs brake for the 3406B Truck Engine has only one support bracket (11).6. Remove Jacobs head bolts (12), and remove Jacobs support brackets (11) from the cylinder head. 7. Remove inner fuel lines (13). 8. Remove Jacobs washers (14) and Jacobs shims (15) from the Jacobs stud assemblies. 9. Remove bolt (17) and two Jacobs stud assemblies (16) that hold the rocker shaft assembly to the head. Remove rocker shaft assembly (18). 10. Remove Jacobs exhaust valve bridges (20) from the exhaust valves only. The intake valves have the Caterpillar intake valve bridges. Remove the Caterpillar intake valve bridges (19).Install Jacobs Engine Brake
Do each step for each end of the engine. The front half is shown.1. Put clean engine oil on the bridges and dowels.2. Install Jacobs exhaust valve bridges (20) and the Caterpillar intake valve bridges (19) on the dowels.3. Keep hand pressure on the bridges, and turn the adjustment screw clockwise until contact is made with the valve stem. Turn the screw an extra 20° to 30°. This will make the dowel straight in the guide and compensate for gap (slack) in the threads. Hold the adjustment screw in this position, and tighten the locknut to a torque of 28 4 N m (21 3 lb.ft.). 4. Put rocker shaft assembly (18) in position on the cylinder head. 5. Install Jacobs washers (21) on the Jacobs stud assemblies (16). Put clean oil on the threads, and install washer and bolt (17) and Jacobs stud assemblies (16). Tighten the center bolt and Jacobs stud assemblies in increments of 70 N m (50 lb.ft.) each until a final torque of 450 N m (330 lb.ft.) is obtained.6. Make an adjustment to the valves to have a clearance of .015 (0.38 mm) for the intake valves and .030 (0.76 mm) for the exhaust
