Engine Start Enable Device 1 : Current Below Normal 2417-5
Ether Injection Control Solenoid : Current Below Normal The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects low current in the circuit. The ECM can only detect this condition when the output driver is not activated.

Ether injection is disabled.
626-6
Engine Start Enable Device 1 : Current Above Normal 2417-6
Ether Injection Control Solenoid : Current Above Normal The ECM detects excessive current flow in the circuit. The ECM can only detect this condition when the output driver is activated.
The code is logged.
Ether injection is disabled. The ether injection system improves cold weather starting. The ECM has full control of the ether injection system. The ECM utilizes information from control maps and engine sensors to calculate the flow demand for the ether system during engine starting. The ether injection system is disabled if there is an active engine shutdown.A feature on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) allows the technician to manually override the ether solenoid to diagnose problems with the system. The override feature remains functional while the engine speed is zero rpm. Access the test via the "Override Parameters" screen on Cat ET.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Thoroughly inspect ECM connectors and the connectors for solenoid. Also inspect the circuit from the ECM connector to the ether injection solenoid. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
D. Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the ether injection solenoid to the ECM.
Connectors and Wiring
Result: The connectors and the wiring appear to be OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: No diagnostic codes are active.
Repair: The problem may have been related to a faulty connection in the harness. Carefully reinspect the connectors and wiring. If an intermittent electrical problem is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: A high current diagnostic code (-6) is active currently.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: A low current diagnostic code (-5) is active currently.
Proceed to Test Step 4
3. Create an Open Circuit at the Connector for the Ether Solenoid and Check for Active Codes
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the connector for the ether solenoid.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Proceed to the "Diagnostic Overrides" screen on Cat ET.
E. Proceed to the "Diagnostic Overrides"
screen on Cat ET.
Note: Monitor the "Active Diagnostic Codes" screen on Cat ET.
F. Check for an active low current diagnostic code (-5) for the ether solenoid.
Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Open Circuit
Result: A high current diagnostic code (-6) was active before disconnecting the connector. A low current diagnostic code (-5) became active after disconnecting the connector.
Repair:Temporarily connect a new ether solenoid to the harness, but do not install the new ether solenoid. Verify that there are no active diagnostic codes for the solenoid. If there are no active diagnostic codes for the solenoid, permanently install the new solenoid. Clear any logged diagnostic codes.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: There is a high current between the solenoid harness connector and the ECM. Leave the solenoid connector disconnected.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
4. Create a Short Circuit at the Connector for the Ether Solenoid and Check for Active Codes
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Install a jumper wire between terminal 1 (ether solenoid) and terminal 2 (digital return) of the solenoid connector. Connect the jumper on the harness side of the connector.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Note: Monitor the "Active Diagnostic Codes" screen on Cat ET after installing the jumper wire.
D. Proceed to the "Diagnostic Overrides" screen on Cat ET.
E. Activate the ether injection system. The diagnostic override will activate for ten seconds.
Note: Monitor the "Active Diagnostic Codes" screen on Cat ET.
F. Wait at least 30 seconds for activation of the high current diagnostic code -6.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Remove the wire jumper.
Short Circuit
Result: The engine harness and the ECM are OK.
Repair: Temporarily connect a new ether solenoid to the harness, but do not install the new ether solenoid. Verify that there are no active diagnostic codes for the solenoid. If there are no active diagnostic codes for the solenoid, permanently install the new solenoid. Clear any logged diagnostic codes.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The low current diagnostic code -5 remains active with the jumper in place. The open circuit is between the ECM and the connector for the ether solenoid.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check for the Correct Operation of the ECM
A. Disconnect the J1/P1 ECM connector.
B. Fabricate two jumper wires that are long enough to create a short across the ECM connector. Crimp connector sockets to one end of each of the jumper wires.
C. Remove the wires from terminal locations P1-11 and P1-18 at the ECM connector. Install one of the jumper wires into each of these terminal locations.
D. Connect the J1/P1 ECM connector.
E. Check the operation of the ECM by creating an open at the ECM.
F. Check the operation of the ECM by creating a short at the ECM.
G. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Restore all the wiring to the
