Information:
1. Remove nuts (1). Remove cover (2) from the timing gear cover. 2. Remove bolts (3), and remove automatic timing advance (4). 3. Remove gear (5) from the front timing gear cover. The following steps are for installation of the automatic timing advance. 4. Lubricate seals (6) with clean engine oil. 5. Put gear (5) in position in the front timing gear cover. 6. Install two 3/8"-16 NC × 6" in. (152.4 mm) long guide bolts (7) in gear (5) as shown. 7. Install automatic timing advance (4) on the end of the fuel injection pump camshaft, and install bolts (3) that hold it. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 3 N m (27 lb.in.). 8. Put the No. 1 piston at top center on the compression stroke. Make reference to Finding Top Center Compression Position For No. 1 Piston in Testing And Adjusting. Remove the timing bolt from the flywheel, and use tool (A) to rotate the crankshaft clockwise (opposite the direction of engine rotation) 45°. 9. Remove plug (8) from the fuel injection pump housing. 10. Install tool (B) in the fuel injection pump housing as shown. Slowly rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (direction of engine rotation) until the timing pin goes into the slot in the fuel injection pump camshaft.
Too much pressure on the timing pin can damage the fuel injection pump or the timing pin.
11. Put the timing bolt in the timing hole in the flywheel housing. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (as seen from the flywheel end of the engine) until the fuel pump camshaft is tight against timing pin (2). This removes gear clearance from the drive train. If the bolt can be installed in the timing hole in the flywheel, the timing of the fuel injection pump is correct.12. If the timing bolt does not go into the timing hole in the flywheel, the timing is not correct. Do the steps that follow to adjust the fuel injection pump timing.a. Loosen four bolts (3). With tool (B) installed and the timing bolt removed, turn the flywheel clockwise (opposite the direction of engine rotation) a minimum of 45°. The reason for this step is to remove backlash from the timing gears when the engine is put on top center (TC).b. Tighten two bolts (3) 180° apart, evenly to a torque of 3 N m (27 lb.in.).c. Turn the flywheel slowly in the direction of engine rotation until the timing bolt can be installed in the flywheel. The No. 1 piston of the engine is now at top center (TC).d. Tighten four bolts (3) to a torque of 55 7 N m (41 5 lb.ft.). Remove the timing bolt from the flywheel and tool (B) from the fuel injection pump housing.13. Turn the flywheel clockwise (opposite the direction of normal engine rotation) a minimum of 45°. Now, turn the flywheel in the direction of engine rotation until timing pin (2) drops into slot of pump camshaft. Now turn the flywheel more, in the direction of normal engine rotation, until all gear clearance is removed from the drive train. Check to see that the timing bolt will go into the flywheel.14. If the timing is not correct, do the procedure in Steps 12a through 12d again. 15. If the timing is correct, remove the timing bolt from the flywheel and the timing pin [tool (B)] from the fuel injection pump housing. Install cover (2) and the plug in fuel injection pump housing.Disassemble Automatic Timing Advance
START BY:a. remove automatic timing advance 1. Remove seals (1) from the body.
Spring force is present behind carrier (3). Put downward pressure on carrier (3) when bolts (2) are removed.
2. Remove bolts (2) from ring (4). 3. Remove ring (4) and the carrier from ring (5). 4. Remove springs (6) and ring (5) from retainer assembly (7). 5. Remove the locknut and setscrew (8). Remove the locknut and screw (9) from the retainer assembly. 6. Remove ring (4) from carrier (3).7. Remove seal (10) from carrier (3). 8. Remove bolts (11) and carrier (12) from carrier (3). 9. Remove lockring (13) and body (14) from the carrier. 10. Install two 3/8"-16 NC bolts into the body as shown. Clamp the bolt heads in a vise, and remove plug (15) from body (14). 11. Remove ring (16) and race (17) from spool (18), and remove spool (18) from the carrier. 12. Remove dowels (19) and flyweights (20) from the carrier.Assemble Automatic Timing Advance
1. Put flyweights (1) in position on carrier (2), and install dowels (3) that hold the flyweights in position. 2. Put spool (4) in position on the carrier, and install race (5) and ring (6) on the end of spool (4). 3. Install two 3/8"-16 NC bolts into body (7) as shown. Clamp the bolt heads in a vice, and install plug (8). Tighten plug (8) to a torque of 70 15 N m (50 11 lb.ft.). 4. Install body (7) into carrier (8), and install lockring (9). 5. Put 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the threads of the bolts that hold carrier (2) in place on carrier (8) and let it dry. Put 9S3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the bolts.6. Put carrier (2) in position on carrier (8), and install the bolts that hold it in place. 7. Install seal (9) on carrier (8). Put clean engine oil on the seal, and install ring (10) on carrier (8). 8. Install setscrew (11) and the locknut. Install the screw and locknut (12) into the retainer assembly. Tighten locknut (12) to a torque of 70 15 N m (50 10 lb.ft.). 9. Place ring (13) and two springs (14) in position on retainer (15).10. Place ring (16) and the carrier in position on ring (13). Make sure that the small spring fits over the end of the spool in the carrier assembly. 11. Use two 3/8"-16 NC × 3.5 in. (89 mm) long bolts, washers and nuts to compress the spring. Install
