Remove bearing (24) from the crankcase.Assemble Air Compressor
1. Crankshaft journals must not be more than 0.001 in. (0.03 mm) out of round. 2. Put the crankshaft in position in the crankcase. Use spacer (2), 1.75 in. (44.5 mm) outside diameter, 1.25 in. (31.8 mm) inside diameter and 4.5 in. (114.3 mm) long with a press to install bearing (1) on the crankshaft and in the crankcase. 3. Install retainer (3). Use a punch to move (peen) the retainer over the screws. 4. Use tooling (A) (if needed) to install bearing (5) in cover (4). Install the cover on the crankcase. 5. Install block (6) on the crankcase. Bores must not be more than 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) out of round or have more than a 0.003 in. (0.08 mm) taper. 6. Put the hole in bushing (9) in alignment with the hole in the rod. Use a press and tooling (B) to install the bushing. New bushings must be reamed or honed until there is a clearance of .0001 to .0006 in. (0.003 to 0.015 mm) between the bushing and the pin.7. Use pin (11) and lock (12) to install the rod in piston (8).8. Check the ring gap clearance with the ring in the cylinder. The clearance must be .005 to .015 in. (0.13 to 0.38mm).9. Use tool (C) to install the rings (7) on the piston (8).
There are wide and narrow rings. The rings must be installed with the bevel toward the top of the piston.
10. Check the groove clearance of the piston rings. The clearance for the wide rings must be .0035 to .0055 in. (0.089 to 0.140mm). The clearance for the narrow rings must be .002 to .004 in. (0.05 to 0.07 mm). 11. Install bearings (10) in the rods and caps. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the pistons and bearings. Use tool (D) to install the piston assemblies in the cylinders. 12. Check the clearance between the connecting rod bearing and crankshaft journals with Plastigage. Put Plastigage on bearing. Install the bearing caps (14) to the respective connecting rod. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 100 to 115 in. lb. (11.30 to 12.99 N m).13. Remove the bearing caps (14) and measure the Plastigage. The clearance must be between .0003 to .0021 in. (0.008 to 0.0533 mm).14. Put clean SAE 30 engine oil on the bearing caps and the bolts. Install the bearing caps, the bolts and the locks. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 100 to 115 in.lb. (11.30 to 12.99 N m). Bend the locks up against the bolts.15. Install the gasket and cover (13) on the crankcase.16. Install the bushings and seats in the block if they were removed.17. Install the rings and seals on the pistons. 18. Install pistons (17) and saddle (16) in the block. Install the spring.19. Install valves (18) and the guides in the block.20. Install the screen and elbow (15). 21. Install seats (20) in the head assembly.22. Install head assembly (19) on the block. 23. Install valves (21), springs (22) and caps (23) in the head assembly. 24. Install governor (24) on the air compressor.end by:a) install air compressor
