Problem
Some connecting rod bearings and main bearings that were electroplated in 2009 have the same date codes as bearings that were previously identified as being suspect. This situation has caused confusion and the return of good bearings from the field.The supplier has plated bearings in 2009 that were originally formed and stamped in 2008.The connecting rod and main bearings are manufactured in a two-step process:
The steel back and the aluminum base are formed and the bearing is stamped with the 5XXXX forming code. An example of the forming code is 5UUND.
The bearing is plated with the lead tin overlay and the month of the plating is recorded by the month code. Month codes include "UC", "UB", and "UD".Note: The month code refers to the month that the plating was applied, not the month of the forming.

Some bearings will have one of the following indicators on the bearings from Morton parts:

(3) Handwritten "2009"
A handwritten "2009" will be present on the back of the bearing. Refer to Illustration 2.

(4) Ink stamped "09"
An ink stamped "09" also located on the back of the bearing. Refer to Illustration 3.

(5) Stamped indicator
A newly manufactured bearing has a stamped indicator of the year that the plating was applied. Refer to Illustration 4.Note: This Technical Information Bulletin only applies to bearings that have a year code of "NO". If the bearings that have a year code of "NO" are not marked with "2009" or "09", the bearings are presumed to be from 2008. Return the 2008 bearings that have a month code of "UG", "UH", "UI", "UJ", "UK", or "UL". Refer to Illustration 1 for examples of the year code and month code.
