Replacing the Engine Oil Filters
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Perform the following procedure after the oil has been drained.Note: Use this procedure if the engine oil filters do not have a control valve.

(1) Oil filter pressure gauge
(2) Cover
(3) Oil filter drain valve
Connect a hose from each drain valve (3) to a suitable container in order to catch the oil.
Open both drain valves (3). Allow the oil to drain. Note: Some oil will remain in the housing after the oil has been drained. This oil will pour out of the housing when cover (2) is removed. Prepare to catch the oil in a suitable container. Clean up any spilled oil with rags. DO NOT use absorbent particles to clean up the oil.
Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.Spring force will be released when covers are removed.Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
Be alert to the spring force. The cover has a spring force up to 240 N (54 lb). Gradually loosen but do not remove the last two bolts or nuts that are located at opposite ends of covers (2). To relieve any spring pressure before removing the last two bolts or nuts, pry the covers loose or tap the covers with a rubber mallet.

(5) Wire rack
(6) O-ring seal
(7) Element
Elements (7) are mounted on wire racks (5) inside the housing. Use a pan to catch the oil that drips when wire racks (5) are removed. Remove wire racks (5). Remove used elements (7). Clean up any oil that is spilled.
Caterpillar oil filters are built to Caterpillar specifications. Use of an oil filter not recommended by Caterpillar could result in severe engine damage to the engine bearings, crankshaft, etc., as a result of the larger waste particles from unfiltered oil entering the engine lubricating system. Only use oil filters recommended by Caterpillar.
Ensure that the new oil filter elements are in good condition. Place the elements on wire rack (5). Install the wire rack and the elements.
Ensure that the surfaces for O-ring seals (6) are clean. Inspect the O-ring seals. If the old O-ring seals are damaged or deteriorated, replace the old O-ring seals with new O-ring seals. Install the O-ring seals.
Install covers (2). Ensure that the spring is seated properly between elements (7) and covers (2). Close drain valves (3).
Ensure that the crankcase is filled with oil. Operate the prelube pump.
Start the engine. Check for oil leaks. Inspect the Used Oil Filter Elements
Cut the used oil filter element open with a utility knife. Remove the metal wrap. Cut the filter element free from the end caps. Spread apart the pleats and inspect the element for metal debris. An excessive amount of debris in the element may indicate early wear or a pending failure.Use a magnet to differentiate between the ferrous metals and the nonferrous metals that are found in the element. Ferrous metals may indicate wear on the steel and the cast iron parts of the engine. Nonferrous metals may indicate wear on the aluminum parts, the brass parts, or the bronze parts of the engine. Parts that may be affected include the following components: main bearings, rod bearings, turbocharger bearings and cylinder heads.Aluminum debris may indicate problems with the bearings of the front gears. If aluminum debris is found, inspect the crankshaft vibration damper and the bearings of the front idler gear.Small amounts of debris may be found in the oil filter element due to normal wear and friction. If an excessive amount of debris is found in the oil filter element, consult your Cat dealer in order to arrange for further oil analysis.
