Table 1
Event Codes
J1939 Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
5417-17 Fuel Filter (Suction Side) Intake Pressure : Low - least severe (1) The fuel pressure in the engine fuel supply system is below the trip point for the programmed delay time. The code is logged. Probable Causes
Fuel filter/water separator problem (customer installed component)
Fuel tank level is low
Fuel supply pressure problem (gravity feed)
Vent port at the fuel tank is plugged
Fuel line restriction
Fuel pressure regulator problem (customer installed component)
Booster pump problem (customer installed component)Recommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
5417-17
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 5417-17 code is present.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Check the Installation for Fuel Filter/Water Separator (Customer Installed System)
A. Ensure that any fuel filters and/or water separators that have been installed by the customer have had the proper maintenance.
Fuel
filter
Result: The installation is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The installation is NOT OK.
Repair: Correct the installation.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Check the Fuel Level in the Tank
A. Visually inspect the fuel level in the fuel tank. Ensure that the fuel tank contains enough fuel in order to operate the engine.
B. Ensure that the fuel supply valve (if equipped) is in the full OPEN position.
Fuel
Level
Result: The fuel level is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The fuel level is NOT OK.
Fill the tank. Verify that the problem has been resolved.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
4.Check the Fuel Supply Pressure (Gravity Feed)
A. For a fuel supply system that is gravity feed, check the head pressure at the inlet of the fuel filters.
B. Ensure that the system pressure is within specifications. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for the correct specifications for this system.
Pressure
Result: The pressure is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The pressure is NOT OK.
Repair: Install a booster pump in the system (customer installed component).
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
5. Inspect the Fuel Tank Vent Port for Debris
Vent
Result: The fuel tank vent is not plugged.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The fuel tank vent is plugged.
Repair: Clear any restrictions with compressed air.
Do not allow debris to enter the fuel tank while you clean the cap. Damage to the fuel system will occur.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
6. Inspect the Fuel Lines for Damage and Restriction
Lines
Result: The fuel lines are OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The fuel lines are NOT OK.
Repair: Clear restrictions and replace any damage lines.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
7. Check the Fuel Pressure Regulator
Note: The regulator is a customer installed component
A. Check for a fuel pressure regulator between the booster pump at the fuel tank and the inlet of the primary fuel filters.
B. If a regulator is present, check the fuel pressure at the outlet of the regulator.
C. If the fuel pressure is not within specifications, adjust the regulator. If a problem with the regulator is suspected, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
Pressure
Result: The pressure is OK.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The pressure is NOT OK.
Repair: Adjust or replace the pressure regulator.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
8. Check the Booster Pump
Note: The pump is a customer installed component.
A. Check the fuel pressure at the outlet of the booster pump. If the outlet pressure of the booster pump is not within specifications, check for a problem with the booster pump.
Pressure
Result: The pressure is OK.
Result: The pressure is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace the customer installed booster pump.
