Remove Sea Water Pump
1. Remove the inlet and outlet water lines to the pump.2. Remove oil supply line (1) from the sea water pump.3. Remove nuts (3) and sea water pump (2). The weight of the sea water pump is approximately 27 kg (60 lb.).Install Sea Water Pump
1. Install sea water pump (1) and gasket (2) on the engine. The weight of the pump is approximately 27 kg (60 lb.). 2. Install oil supply line (3).3. Install the inlet and outlet water lines to the pump.Disassemble Sea Water Pump
START BY:a) remove sea water pump 1. Remove the bolt and washer from the sea water pump shaft. Remove gear (3) with tooling (A).2. Remove housing (1).3. Remove clamp (4). Remove end cover (2). 4. Remove O-ring seal (8) and ring (6). Remove plate (9) from end cover (2).5. Remove cotter pin, nut and washer (7). Remove impeller (5) with tool (B). 6. Remove plate (14) from body (10).7. Remove the key from shaft (13). Remove shim (12) and washer (11). 8. Remove nuts (15) that hold body (10) to housing (16). 9. Use a press to remove housing (16) and shaft (13) from body (10). Remove seal (17).
Do not let housing (16) fall when it is removed from body (10).
10. Remove the ceramic ring from body (10) with tooling (C) and a press. If seal (17) or the ceramic ring have damage, use new parts for replacement. 11. Remove the rubber washer (thrower) from shaft (13). Remove seal (18) with tool group (D). 12. Remove snap ring (19) with tool (E). Steps 14 through 17 are for sea water pumps on 3408 Generator Sets.13. Bend the lock from nut (21). Remove nut (21) and the lock with tool (F). Remove snap ring (20) with tool (E). 14. Remove shaft (13) from housing (16) with a press. Do not let the shaft fall as it is removed.15. Remove the bearing and the collar from shaft (13) with a press.16. Remove the bearing from housing (16) with tool (C) and a press. Steps 18 through 21 are for sea water pumps from a 3412 Generator Set.17. Bend back the lock from nut (23). Remove nut (23) with tool (F). Remove the lock. Remove spacer (22). 18. Remove shaft (13) from housing (16) with a press. Do not let the shaft drop as it is removed.19. Remove the bearing from shaft (13) with a press.20. Remove bearing retainer (24). Remove the bearing from housing (15) with tooling (C) and a press. 21. Use tool (G) to remove bearing race (25) from the housing.Assemble Sea Water Pump
1. Install the bearing race in housing (1) with tooling (A). Install the bearing until it is against the shoulder in housing (1). Use tooling (B) to install the bearing in the housing for the 3412 Generator Set. 2. On the 3408 Generator Sets, use tooling (A) to install bearing (2) in housing (1). On the 3412 Generator Sets, use tooling (B) to install the bearings. Make sure the bearing is against the shoulder in the housing. Step 3 is for sea water pumps on 3408 Generator Sets only.3. Use tool (C) to install snap ring (3) over bearing (2) to hold it in place. Step 4 is for sea water pumps on 3412 Generator Sets only.4. Install the housing that holds bearing (2) in housing (1). 5. Install single roller bearing (5) on shaft (4) until it is against the shoulder of shaft (4).6. Put 9S3263 Retaining Compound to the inside diameter of collar (6) and on shaft (4). Install collar (6) until it makes contact with bearing (5). Remove any excess compound. 7. Put housing (1) in position on tool (E) with the inside race of bearing (2) against tool (E). Install shaft (4) and bearing (5) as a unit. Make sure that shaft (4) is in alignment with bearing (2) and bearing (5) is in alignment with its respective outer race. On sea water pumps for 3408 Generator Sets, use tool (D) and not tool (E). 8. Use tool (C) to install snap ring (7). 9. Install seat (8) with tooling (F) until it makes contact with ring (7). Install rubber washer (9) (thrower) on shaft (4). Install seal (8) with the lip of the seal toward ring (7). 10. Install spacer (10), the lock and nut (11). Use tool (G) to tighten the nut. For sea water pumps on the 3408 Generator Set, tighten nut (11) to 75 5 N m (55 4 lb.ft.). For sea water pumps on the 3412 Generator Sets, tighten nut (11) to 102.5 7.5 N m (76 6 lb.ft.). 11. Put clean water on ceramic ring (12). Install ring (12) with tooling (A) and hand pressure. Install the ring with the bevel edge down. 12. Install body (15) on housing (1). Install nuts (17) and locks.13. Put clean water on seal (18). Install seal (18) on the pump shaft with the large sealing surface against the ceramic ring. Use hand pressure only to install seal (18). Make a replacement of both seal (18) and ceramic ring (12) if either is damaged or worn.14. Install washer (13) on the pump shaft.15. Install plate (19) in body (15) with tabs (14) in alignment with the notches in body (15).16. Install the O-ring seal around ring (16). 17. Install the original shims (22) if available or shims of a thickness 0.51 mm (.020 in.) as a place to start.18. Use a micrometer and measure the thickness of the impeller (20) and the width of ring (16) to find the difference in dimensions. This difference is used to find the shims needed to get the same amount of clearance on each side of the impeller when it is installed in the pump.19. Install key (21) and impeller (20) on the pump shaft. Install the impeller with the threaded puller holes toward the outside. 20. Install the washer and nut (24). Tighten the nut to a torque of 60
