Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove drain plug (3) and loosen plug (1) in order to drain the oil from the engine. The capacity of the engine crankcase and filter is approximately 37 L (10 US gal).
After you drained the oil, disconnect tube assembly (2) and fitting (4). Remove the O-ring seals from the tube assembly and the fitting.

Remove bolt (5) and the washer. Remove bolt (6), the washer, clamp (9), and hose assembly (10) from front oil pan (8). Repeat this Step for the two bolts, the two washers, the clamp and hose assembly on the other side of the front oil pan. Move hose assembly (10) out of the way.
Remove four bolts (12) and the four washers from center oil pan (13) and the front oil pan.
Remove bolts (7) from the front oil pan and the engine block. Remove front oil pan (8) from the engine. The weight of front oil pan (8) is approximately 11 kg (25 lb). Remove gasket (11) from the center oil pan.
Open the engine side door on the left side of the machine.

Remove bolt (15) and the washer (not shown). Move dipstick (16) away from bracket (14). Pull the dipstick out of the oil reservoir. Remove O-ring seal (17) from the dipstick.

Remove two bolts (20) and the two washers. Remove pump suction pipe assembly (19), with bell support (21) and suction bell assembly (22) from oil pump (18). Remove the O-ring seal from pump suction pipe assembly (19) .

Remove bolts (23) and the washers from center oil pan (13) and the rear oil pan.
Remove bolt (24) and the washer. Remove bolt (25), the washer and block (26) .
Remove the remaining bolts (27) and the center oil pan from the block.

Remove bolts (28) and the washers. Carefully remove rear oil pan (29) .Note: Keep the rear oil pan level while the rear oil pan is being lowered. The rear oil pan will have some oil left in the pan.
Remove gasket (30) from rear oil pan (29) .

Remove bolt (32) and retaining washer (31) .

Remove two bolts (35). Remove bolts (40) and slide inlet tube assembly (37) out of the pump. Remove inlet screen (36) from the inlet tube assembly. Remove O-ring seal (39) from the inlet tube assembly.Note: Two Bolts (35) are longer than bolts (40) .
Remove two bolts (43) and the washers. Slide tube assembly (42) out of the pump. Remove O-ring seal (41) from the inlet tube assembly.
Remove oil pan gasket (38), oil pan plate assembly (33), and oil pan gasket (34) from the block.Note: Oil pan gasket (38) and oil pan gasket (34) are identical.
