PROBLEM
The fuel injectors used in the C6.4 engine installed in certain 320D excavators have been failing due to high levels of contaminants in the fuel supplies commonly found in the Asia-Pacific Regions. Fuel cleanliness practices and fuel system maintenance are very important in receiving adequate life from the fuel injectors. In an effort to improve these practices, new engine software has been developed to increase the awareness to the operator when a fuel filter is plugged or is in need of replacement.
Also, field investigations have uncovered that non Caterpillar fuel filters are being used in some of the areas in the Asia Pacific Region. The non Caterpillar fuel filters look identical to genuine Caterpillar fuel filters but do not have the efficiency to filter the high levels of contaminants in the fuel. This service letter will provide 1 set of fuel filters for the machines covered in this program to be used, in an effort to educate the customers on the benefits of using genuine Caterpillar fuel filters.
