336-2 Engine Control Switch erratic, intermittent, or incorrect     The inputs from the ECS are in a different state.     The code is logged.    The 336-02 diagnostic code is generated when the two start/run/stop inputs to the Engine Control Module (ECM) are not complementary. The status for the Engine Control Switch will display "Abnormal/Incorrect Data" while the fault is active. The Electronic Modular Control Panel 3 (EMCP 3) controls the starting and stopping of the engine. The engine parameters for the total number of crank cycles and the engine cooldown must be programmed to zero (0).The following inputs for the engine control are located on the panel for the EMCP 3: "RUN", "AUTO" and "STOP". These switches control a primary input and a secondary input to the ECM. The primary input to the ECM is over the J1939 data link. The secondary input is a set of relay contacts in the EMCP 3 that are normally open to digital return. If the primary input is lost the ECM will look to the secondary input. The engine parameter for the secondary input must be set to the enabled state in order for the secondary input to be recognized. When the "RUN" switch is pushed on the panel for the EMCP 3 the start/run/stop inputs 1 and 2 to the ECM are pulled low. If the signals to the start/run/stop input of the ECM are in opposite states, the ECM determines that one of the signals is faulty. When this happens the ECM will keep the last good input. When the diagnostic code activates and the switch is in the "STOP" position, the engine will not start. When the diagnostic activates and the switch is in the "RUN" position, the engine will continue to run.Note: For the troubleshooting of applications that are equipped with an EMCP 3, refer to Systems Operation, Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, RENR7902.

Turn the ECS to the OFF position. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connector and the J2/P2 ECM connector. Inspect all of the connectors that are associated with the circuit.Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connectors that are associated with the circuit.
Check the allen head screw on each ECM connector for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:All connectors, pins and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion or of pinch points.Results:
OK - The harness and wiring appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem in the wiring harness.Repair: Perform the following repair:Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Status of the ECS on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)
Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position. Turn the main disconnect switch to the ON position.
Turn the ECS to the START position.
Monitor the status for the ECS on Cat ET.
Turn the ECS to the STOP position.Expected Result:The status for the ECS reads "OFF" when the ECS is turned to the STOP position. The status for the ECS reads "ON" when the ECS is turned to the START position.Results:
OK - The status for the ECS is correct in both the STOP and the START positions.Repair: The circuit for the ECS is functioning correctly. Reset the system and check for any active diagnostic codes. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - The status for the switch is not correct in either the STOP or the START positions. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check the Wiring for an Open Circuit
Turn the ECS to the OFF position. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the ECM connector J1/P1.
Note the location of the wires on the ECS. Remove the wire to the −Battery from the ECS.
Check continuity between P1-21 and the wire F716-BK on the ECS.
Check continuity between P1-22 and the wire F716-BK on the ECS.
Check continuity between the wire to the −Battery on the ECS and the −Battery.Expected Result:Each resistance measurement indicated a short circuit.Results:
OK - Each resistance measurement indicated a short circuit. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - A resistance measurement did not indicate a short circuit.Repair: There is excessive resistance or an open in the wiring. Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.STOPTest Step 4. Check the Wiring for a Short Circuit
Remove the wire F716-BK and the wire F716-BK from the ECS.
Ensure that the wires from the ECS are not touching engine ground or any other wires in the harness.
Check continuity between P1-21 and every wire on the P1 connector and on the P2 connector. Measure the resistance between P1-21 and engine ground.
