INSTALL NEW ROCKER ARM BUTTONS, 3508 Marine Engines, 3508 Generator Sets, 3516 Generator Sets, 1102, 1105, PI7045 U-79 A-72 AU-66 B-30 C-73 E-64 O-61 PRIORITY See July 6, 1984 October 13, 1983 Problem Some of the buttons used in the rocker arm assemblies in the above engine models were not heat treated. See the Illustration. Buttons which have not been hardened will wear quickly, causing excessive valve lash, possible valve component or camshaft damage, and retarded injection timing. The buttons are now properly hardened. Affected Engines And Parts Needed All the listed 3508 and 3516 Engines are included in this Program. Model Serial Number Parts Needed 3508 Marine Engines 96Y607-96Y610 24-8F8858 Button 69Z253 24-9F7707 Ring 3508 Generator Set 23Z514-23Z546, 550 70Z557 3516 Generator Set 25Z428-25Z431 48-8F8858 Button 48-9F7707 Ring Action Requested (No Parts Stock Action Needed) Many of these same engines need several other PIP's. Review your Service Letters and PIP's for 3500 Series Engines and do all the PIP's at the same time. Remove the valve cover and rocker arm assemblies. Remove the 9F7707 Ring and 8F8858 Button and replace these with the new parts. Install the rocker arm assemblies, adjust the valve lash, and check the synchronization of the unit injectors in all cylinders according to the instructions in the appropriate Service Manual. The rocker arm and rocker arm socket have marks on them which must be aligned during assembly. Also, the long axis of the oval-shaped 9F7707 Ring must be installed so that the long axis of the oval is at right angles (perpendicular) to the rocker arm shaft. See the illustration. This allows the button to move properly during engine operation. Use care when installing the new parts. If either part is dropped into the rocker shaft base assembly, it could become lodged in an oil drain hole or in the push rod/camshaft lifter area. Additional disassembly labor would be required to remove the stray piece. 1/831013/01/001 If the work is done on one engine in a multiple engine installation, rework all engines at the same time if they are in the affected serial number range. Warranty Allowance List the new parts on the claim. Caterpillar will contribute labor at your selling rate on the following basis: 3508 Marine and 3508 Generator Sets - 4 hours 3516 Generator Sets - 8 hours These are the actual times required to do the job. Parts Disposition Dispose of the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin, "Warranty Parts Handling". Termination Date May 31, 1984.
