Information:
Introduction
This Special Instruction outlines the rework procedure for the engine timing chain on certain 306 and 307D Excavators.Do not perform any procedure that is outlined until you have read the information in this publication. Do not order and parts until you understand the information that is contained in this publication.End user must inspect the timing chain at every 1000 hours as per the Operation and Maintenance Manual instruction.Safety
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are cause by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person must also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance of a potential hazard. Therefore, the warning in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Avoid using a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar. If used, ensure the safety of the operating personnel and others.Ensure that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedure that are used.
Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Contact your Cat dealer for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

If an inspection reveals that timing chain (3) has been extended within 22 - 25 mm (0.87 - 0.98 inch), replace timing chain only.
If an inspection reveals that timing chain (3) is extended to or beyond 26 mm (1.02 inch), replace timing chain and remove engine front timing gear case. Inspect guide plate (1) and tension lever (2) .
Replace guide plate (1) and tension lever (2) if cracking or flaking is observed on surfaces (7) and (8) .
Replace oil jet (4) if it has been damaged.
Replace front seal (5) .
Apply a bead of sealant (ThreeBond 1207C or equivalent) to the front plate mounting surface of the timing gear case evenly and without any breaks.
Install the timing gear case within 15 minutes of applying the sealant. Be careful not to dislodge the sealant.
Retighten the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt to 323 N m (238.2 lb ft).
Retighten the timing gear case mounting nut to 23 N m (17.0 lb ft).
Retighten the timing gear case mounting bolt to 7 - 10 N m (5.2 - -7.4 lb ft).ReferenceMitsubishi Diesel Engine, KENR5078, "Engine", "Replacement of Timing Chain"
