Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Determine the Code
A. Establish communication between Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) and the engine ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Record the logged or active codes.
Codes
Result: A E1262 (1) or a 5419-7 code is logged or active.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 5419-3, 5419-4, 3514-3 or a 3514-4 code is logged or active. There is a problem with the wiring between the ECM and the engine throttle valve.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: A 5419-6 or a 3514-6 code is logged or active. There is a problem with the wiring between the ECM and the engine throttle valve.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
Result: A 5419-5, or a 3514-5 code is logged or active. There is a problem with the wiring between the ECM and the engine throttle valve.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
Result: A 5419-13 or 3514-13 code is active or logged.
Repair: Replace the engine throttle valve. Verify the repair and return to service.
2. Inspect the Wiring to the Engine Throttle Valve Actuator
A. Inspect the wiring from the ECM to the actuator for the engine throttle valve.
B. Check all the connectors. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
Electrical Connectors and/or Wiring
Result: A damaged wire or damaged connector was not found.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: A damaged wire or damaged connector was found.
Repair: Repair the damaged wire or the damaged connector.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
3. Perform the "Engine Throttle Valve Test"
A. Perform the "Engine Throttle Valve Test" in Cat ET.
Engine Throttle Valve Test
Result: The "Engine Throttle Valve Test" completed successfully.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result: The "Engine Throttle Valve Test" did not complete successfully.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Inspect the Piping Between the Compressor and the Engine Throttle Valve
A. Check for cracks in the tubing.
B. Check for loose or damaged hardware.
Air Tubing
Result: The tube is not damaged or cracked.
Repair: Replace the engine throttle valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, Engine Throttle Valve - Remove and Install.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result: The tube is damaged or cracked.
Repair: Replace the tubing or repair the tubing.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
5. Check the Voltage on the Engine Throttle Valve Circuit
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Verify that the harness connector is free of debris, free of corrosion, and securely connected.
C. Disconnect the engine throttle valve from the wiring harness.
D. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
E. Verify that there is +5 VDC between Pin-1 (Supply) and Pin-2 (Return) on the engine throttle valve wiring harness connector. Refer to the Schematic for more information.
F. Turn the keyswitch OFF.
+5 VDC
Result: There is 5 VDC between the supply and return on the engine throttle valve connector.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: There is not 5 VDC between the supply and return on the engine throttle valve connector. There is a problem with the wiring harness or the ECM.
Repair: Repair or replace the parts as necessary.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
6. Create an Open at the Engine Throttle Valve Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch OFF.
B. Disconnect the engine throttle valve from the wiring harness.
C. Turn the keyswitch ON.
D. Monitor Cat ET for an active -3 diagnostic code for the engine throttle valve.
E. Turn the keyswitch OFF.
Active -3 Code
Result: A -3 diagnostic code became active after disconnecting the engine throttle valve.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: A -3 diagnostic code did not become active after disconnecting the engine throttle valve. There is a problem with the wiring harness or the ECM.
Repair: Repair or replace the parts as necessary.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
7. Create a Short at the Sensor Connector
A. Turn the keyswitch OFF.
B. Create a short between Pin-3 (Signal) and Pin-2 (Return) at the engine throttle valve connector. Refer to the Schematic for more information.
C. Turn the keyswitch ON.
D. Monitor Cat ET for an active -4 diagnostic code for the engine throttle valve.
