Information:

Recommended Actions
Perform the following diagnostic procedures in order:Normal Operation
Be aware of normal operating conditions.Cold outside temperatures can affect the production of white smoke.Fuel Supply
Monitor the exhaust for smoke while the engine is being cranked. If no smoke is present, there may be a problem with the fuel quality or there may be a problem with the fuel supply.
Check the fuel quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Quality - Test".
Check the fuel pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System Pressure - Test".
Ensure that the fuel system has been primed. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System - Prime".
Check for fuel supply lines that are restricted.
Check the fuel filters.
If the temperature is below 0 °C (32 °F), check for solidified fuel (wax).
Check for air in the fuel system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Air in Fuel - Test".Coolant Temperature Circuit
Connect the electronic service tool.
Check for diagnostic codes that are related to the coolant temperature circuit.
Monitor the status of the coolant temperature sensor on the electronic service tool. If an active open or a short circuit diagnostic code is detected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Temperature Sensor Open or Short Circuit - Test".Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector
Ensure that the hydraulic electronic unit injector connector (J300/P300) is fully connected and free of corrosion.
Ensure that the ECM engine harness connector (J2/P2) is fully connected and free of corrosion.
Connect the electronic service tool. Use the cylinder cutout test. Access the cylinder cutout test by selecting the "Diagnostic Menu" and the "Diagnostics Test Menu". Run the cylinder cutout test in order to disable each cylinder. Disabling each cylinder allows the technician to isolate the misfiring cylinders. If the misfiring cylinder can be isolated to a specific cylinder, refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid Circuit - Test".Combustion Problem
Check for combustion problems.Examples of combustion problems are shown in the following list:
Outside temperatures are too cold.
Mechanical problemAir Inlet Heater
Inspect the wiring for the air inlet heater for damage or bad connections.
Connect the electronic service tool.
Check the coolant temperature sensor and the intake air temperature sensor for proper operation.
Check the element inside the air inlet heater.
Check the air inlet heater relay for proper operation. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Air Inlet Heater Circuit - Test".Air Inlet Restriction
Check the air inlet system for restrictions. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Air Inlet and Exhaust System - Inspect".Cold Mode
The ECM will set the cold start strategy when the coolant temperature is below 18 °C (64 °F).When the cold start strategy is activated, low idle rpm will be increased to 1000 rpm and the engines power will be limited.Cold mode operation will be deactivated when any of the following conditions have been met:
Coolant temperature reaches 18 °C (64 °F).
The engine has been running for fourteen minutes.Cold mode operation varies the fuel injection amount for white smoke cleanup. Cold mode operation also varies the timing for white smoke cleanup. Usually, the engine operating temperature is reached before the walk-around inspection is completed. The engine will idle at the programmed low idle rpm in order to be put in gear. Engine Speed/Timing Sensors
Check the calibration of the engine speed/timing sensors if the following diagnostic code is present.
CID 261-FMI 13 Engine Timing Calibration requiredRefer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Speed/Timing Sensor - Calibrate".
Verify that the crankshaft and camshaft drive gears are set with the proper orientation. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft - Remove and Install".Personality Module
Verify that the correct personality module is installed. Refer to Troubleshooting, "System Configuration Parameters".Component Wear
Check the engine for problems in the following areas:
Piston wear
Valve wear
Piston ring wear
Cylinder liner wear
Reduced compression
