Information:
Each time any significant quantity of oil (or other fluid) is spilled on or near the engine, it should be cleaned up. Accumulated grease and oil on an engine is a fire hazard. Remove this debris with steam cleaning or high pressure water at PM Level 2 or every 6000 service hours. Wipe clean all fittings, caps and plugs before servicing.
Starting The Engine
If the engine is equipped with an Air Inlet Heater, do not use ether or other starting fluids. Using starting fluids (ether) in an engine equipped with an air inlet heater could result in engine damage and/or personal injury.
Engine Equipped With Air Inlet Heater
To determine if the engine is equipped with an Air Inlet Heater, there will be an indicator lamp on the dashboard of the vehicle marked "AIR INLET HEATER". Start the engine using the following procedure.1. Set the Parking Brake. Place the transmission in the "NEUTRAL" position and disengage the flywheel clutch (if equipped) to remove the transmission drag and prevent movement of the truck. Depressing the clutch in cold weather can mean the difference between starting and not starting. Depressing the clutch in warm weather produces faster starts and reduces battery drain.2. Turn the ignition switch (key) to the "ON" position. If the air inlet heater indicator lamp activates "ON", wait until the indicator lamp cycles to OFF (approx. 60 seconds) before cranking engine. Attempting to start the engine before the indicator lamp goes "OFF" disables the air inlet heater and could result in excessive white smoke at start-up. If the engine fails to start in 20 seconds, the control will not let the air inlet heater operate, which will result in excessive white smoke at start-up.3. If the air inlet heater indicator lamp does not activate (or cycles to "OFF" after 60 seconds), push the crank button or turn the ignition switch (key) to the "START" position to crank the engine. It may be necessary to push down on the throttle to get the fuel rack to move to the "fuel on" position. If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch and wait two minutes to allow the starter motor to cool before using it again.
Oil pressure should rise within 15 seconds after the engine starts. If oil pressure is not indicated on gauge within 15 seconds, do not drive the truck. Stop the engine, investigate and correct the cause.
4. If the air inlet heater indicator lamp activates and cycles to "OFF" after 60 seconds, the indicator lamp should activate "ON" again after the engine starts. Allow the engine to idle about three minutes, or until the water temperature gauge has begun to rise. Check all gauges during the warm-up period. Operating the engine at higher speeds will reduce the effectiveness of the air inlet heater. Maintain idle speed until the lamp cycles "OFF" again to indicate the air inlet heater has shut off (approx. 6 minutes). Do not increase engine speed until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal.5. When the air inlet heater indicator lamp cycles to "OFF", depress the accelerator and apply load to the engine to further minimize white smoke. If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch and wait two minutes to allow the starter motor to cool and repeat this procedure.Engine Not Equipped With Air Inlet Heater
Do not store starting fluid containers in the cab. Failure to do so, could result in an explosion and/or fire and possible personal injury.
Startability will be improved at temperatures below 0° C (+32° F) by the use of a starting aid (ether) or use of a cylinder block coolant heater or other means to heat the crankcase oil. This will help minimize white smoke and misfire during cold weather start-up. Use ether when temperatures are below 0° C (32° F), and the engine is not equipped with an Air Inlet Heater.
When using starting fluid (ether), follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, use it sparingly and spray it only while cranking the engine. Do not use starting fluid (ether) if the engine is equipped with an air inlet heater. Excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.
Start the engine using the following procedure.1. Set the Parking Brake. Place the transmission in "NEUTRAL" and disengage the flywheel clutch (if equipped) to remove the transmission drag and prevent movement of the truck. Depressing the clutch in cold weather can mean the difference between starting and not starting. Depressing the clutch in warm weather produces faster starts and reduces battery drain.2. Turn the ignition switch (key) to the "ON" position and push the crank button or turn the ignition switch to the "START" position. It may be necessary to push down on the throttle to get the fuel rack to move to the "fuel on" position. If the engine fails to start in 30 seconds, release the starting (ignition) switch and wait two minutes to allow the starter motor to cool before using it again.
Do not increase engine speed until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal. Oil pressure should raise within 15 seconds after the engine starts. If oil pressure is not indicated on gauge within 15 seconds, do not drive the truck. Stop the engine, investigate and correct the cause.
For starting in cold weather, to minimize white smoke; start the engine and allow to idle for 30 seconds. Depress the accelerator until engine speed reaches 1200 rpm and then allow the engine to return to low idle.3. Allow the engine to idle about three minutes, or until the water temperature gauge has begun to rise. Check all gauges during the warm-up period. Check fuel level gauge. Do not fill fuel tank to top. Fuel expands as it gets warm and may overflow.Starting With Jump Start Cables
Improper jumper cable connections can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Prevent sparks near the batteries. Sparks could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jumper cable ends to contact each other or the engine.
