(12) Outlet bonnet of the engine oil cooler
(13) Inlet bonnet of the engine oil cooler
(14) Inlet for the jacket water pump The jacket water pump is located on the right front side of the engine and is part of water lines group (6). The water pump is gear driven by the front gear group. Coolant from the radiator (1) is drawn into water pump inlet (14). The rotation of the impeller inside the jacket water pump creates coolant flow in the cooling system. The coolant flows from the water pump to the inlet bonnet of the engine oil cooler (13).As the coolant leaves engine oil cooler (4), the flow is divided. Most of the coolant from the outlet bonnet of the engine oil cooler (12) flows into cylinder block (2). The remainder of the coolant flows through tube (11) and flows to the turbocharger (3) and exhaust bypass valve (5). Coolant exits the turbocharger turbine housing and exhaust bypass valve through tube (8) and flows into water-cooled exhaust manifold (7).The coolant that flows into the cylinder block flows around the cylinder liners and into the cylinder head. As the coolant flows through the cylinder block, the design of the coolant jacket causes the coolant flow to increase velocity around the cylinder liners. This design ensures better cooling efficiency as the coolant passes by the liners. The coolant is pumped through the top deck of the cylinder block into the cylinder heads. The coolant flows through passages around the valves ports and combustion chamber of the cylinder head. The coolant exits the rear of the cylinder head into the water-cooled exhaust manifold. As the coolant flows through the exhaust manifold, the exhaust gasses are cooled. The coolant then flows out the water-cooled exhaust manifold and into water temperature regulator housings (9). This engine has two water temperature regulators. The water temperature regulators control the temperature of the engine coolant by controlling the amount of coolant that is directed into radiator. The coolant exits the water lines group through the outlet of the water temperature regulator housing (10).Water Flow through the Water Lines Group

(15) Bypass tubes When the coolant is cold, the water temperature regulator is closed. The coolant is routed through bypass tubes (15) to the jacket water pump. The coolant continues to circulate through the engine. When the coolant achieves normal operating temperature, the water temperature regulators open and coolant flow is divided. Most of the coolant exits outlet (10) from the top of the water temperature regulator housings and is sent to the radiator. The remainder of the coolant flows through the bypass tubes to the jacket water pump for recirculation. After the coolant is cooled by the radiator, the coolant is routed to inlet (14) of the jacket water pump.Note: The water temperature regulators are necessary to maintain the correct engine temperature. If the water temperature regulators are not installed in the system, there is no mechanical control for the coolant flow. Most of the coolant will take the path of least resistance through the bypass tubes. If the regulators are removed, the engine may be prone to overheat in hot weather. Also, the small amount of coolant that goes through the radiator in cold weather will not allow the engine to achieve normal operating temperatures. The water temperature regulators control the minimum temperature of the coolant. The radiator controls the maximum temperature of the coolant. The total system capacity depends on the amount of coolant in the cylinder block, the capacity of the piping, and of the radiator.Separate Circuit Aftercooler

(2) Auxiliary coolant pump
(3) Aftercooler core A separate cooling circuit is necessary for the aftercooler on this engine. The water jacket system cannot provide the low coolant temperature that is necessary for cooling the turbocharged air.Auxiliary coolant pump (2) is gear driven by the rear gear group. Coolant from customer supplied radiator (1) is drawn into the pump inlet. Rotation of the impellers inside the auxiliary water pump creates flow within the cooling system. The coolant flows from the pump outlet to aftercooler core (3)The coolant flows through the passages in the aftercooler. The air that is compressed and heated by the turbocharger exchanges heat with the coolant that is flowing through the aftercooler core. The heated coolant flows from the aftercooler to the radiator where the coolant os cooled by the air flowing through the fins of the radiator. The engine rating and the application determine the operating temperature of the aftercooler. For this application, the aftercooler will maintain the coolant temperature for the aftercooler coolant at 54 °C (130 °F).
