Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Turn the DC breaker to the ON position.
B. Establish communication between Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
C. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Diagnostic Code
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 3031 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the DEF Tank Temperature Sensor.
A. Turn the DC breaker to the ON position.
B. Connect to Cat ET.
C. Monitor the "DEF Tank Temperature" in the status screen in Cat ET.
D. The DEF tank temperature should be within 5° C (9° F) of ambient temperature.
DEF Tank Temperature
Result: The DEF tank temperature reading is within 5° C (9° F) of ambient temperature.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The DEF tank temperature reading is NOT within 5° C (9° F) of ambient temperature.
A failed DEF tank temperature sensor has been detected.
Repair: Replace the DEF tank temperature sensor.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
3. Check the 120 VAC Breaker to the Dosing Cabinet
A. Turn the AC breaker to the ON position.
B. Measure the voltage between the breaker power supply to the dosing cabinet and a known good ground.
120 VAC
Result: There was 120 VAC between the 120 VAC breaker dosing cabinet power supply terminal and a known good ground.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: There NOT was 120 VAC between the 120 VAC breaker dosing cabinet power supply terminal and a known good ground.
Check for 120 VAC from the customer power supply. If 120 VAC is present, then replace the 120 VAC circuit breaker.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
4. Check the DEF Tank Heater
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the DEF tank heater from the wiring harness connector.
C. Turn the AC and DC breaker to the ON position.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to activate the following overrides:
- "Aftertreatment #1 DEF Tank Heater Relay Override"
F. Measure the voltage on the DEF tank heater wiring harness connector.
120 VAC
Result: There was 120 VAC at the DEF tank heater connector.
Repair: Replace the DEF tank heater.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
Result: There was NOT 120 VAC at the DEF tank heater connector.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the DEF Tank Heater Relay Load Circuit
A. Turn the AC and DC breaker to the ON position.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Use Cat ET to activate the following overrides:
- "Aftertreatment #1 DEF Tank Heater Relay Override"
D. Measure the voltage between the load side terminals of the DEF tank heater relay.
120 VAC
Result: There was 120 VAC at the DEF tank heater relay connector.
There is a problem with the wiring between the DEF tank heater and the DEF tank heater relay.
Repair: Repair or replace the wiring harness.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
