Engine Oil Viscosities for Ambient Temperatures
Ambient Temperature
Viscosity Grade Minimum Maximum
SAE 0W-40 −40 °C (−40 °F) 40 °C (104 °F)
SAE 5W-40 −30 °C (−22 °F) 50 °C (122 °F)
SAE 15W-40 −9.5 °C (15 °F) 50 °C (122 °F) Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6251, "Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" for additional information that relates to lubricants.Fuel Recommendations
In North America, diesel fuel that is identified as No. 1-D or No. 2-D in "ASTM D975" generally meet the specifications. These fuels are distilled from crude oil. Diesel fuels from other sources could exhibit detrimental properties that are not defined or controlled by this specification.Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6251, "Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" for additional information that relates to diesel fuel.Coolant Recommendations
Do not use a commercial coolant/antifreeze that only meets the ASTM "D3306" or equivalent specification. This type of coolant/antifreeze is made for light duty automotive applications.Use only the coolant/antifreeze that is recommended.
The following coolants are the primary types of coolants that are used in Caterpillar Engines:Preferred - Cat ELC (Extended Life Coolant) or a commercial extended life coolant that meets the Caterpillar EC-1 specificationAcceptable - Cat DEAC (Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant) or a commercial heavy-duty coolant/antifreeze that meets "ASTM D4985" or "ASTM D6210" specificationsCaterpillar recommends a 1:1 mixture of water and glycol. This mixture will provide optimum heavy-duty performance as a coolant/antifreeze.Note: Cat DEAC does not require a treatment with a Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) at the initial fill. However, a commercial heavy-duty coolant/antifreeze that only meets the "ASTM D4985" specification WILL require a treatment with an SCA at the initial fill. A commercial heavy-duty coolant/antifreeze that meets the "ASTM D6210" specification will NOT require a treatment with an SCA at the initial fill. Read the label or the instructions that are provided by the manufacturer of the commercial heavy-duty coolant/antifreeze.Note: These coolants WILL require a treatment with a supplemental coolant additive on a maintenance basis. In stationary engine applications and marine engine applications that do not require protection from boiling or freezing, a mixture of SCA and water is acceptable. Caterpillar recommends a minimum of 6 percent to a maximum of 8 percent SCA concentration in those cooling systems. Distilled water or deionized water is preferred. Water which has the required properties may be used. For the water properties, refer to Special Publication, SEBU6251, "Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" for additional information that pertains to coolants.Note: Table 2 is a list of the coolants that are recommended and the service life (calendar) of the coolants. The service life of coolant is also limited by use (service hours). Refer to the specific engine Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule". To achieve this service life, the coolants must be properly maintained. The maintenance program includes S O S coolant analysis.
Table 2
Coolant Recommendations for use in Cat Diesel Engines
Recommendations Product Service Hours(1)(2)(3) Required Maintenance
Preferred Cat ELC (Cat Extended Life Coolant) 12000 hours or 6 years Add Cat ELC Extender at 6000 service hours or one half of service life
Cat ELI (Cat Extended Life Inhibitor) 12000 hours or 6 years Add Cat ELC Extender at 6000 service hours or one half of service life
Min requirements Cat EC-1 specification and "ASTM D6210" and
Organic Additive Technology (OAT) based on a combination of a monocarboxylic acid and a dicarboxylic acid
Phosphate, borate, and silicate free
Tolyltriazole: minimum typical concentration of 900 ppm
Nitrite: minimum typical concentration of 500 ppm in new coolants 6000 hours or 6 years Add Extender at 3000 service hours or one half of service life
Acceptable Cat DEAC (Cat Diesel Engine Antifreeze/Coolant) 3000 hours or 3 years SCA (Supplemental coolant additive) at maintenance intervals
Min requirements for fully formulated Heavy Duty Commercial coolants "ASTM D6210" and
Nitrite (as NO2) concentration: Minimum of 1200 ppm (70 grains/US gal) and maximum of 2400 ppm (140 grains/US gal)
Silicon concentration: minimum of 100 ppm and maximum of 275 ppm 3000 hours or 2 years SCA at maintenance intervals
Min requirements for Commercial coolants requiring SCA precharge "ASTM D4985" and(1)
Nitrite (as NO2) concentration: Minimum of 1200 ppm (70 grains/US gal) and maximum of 2400 ppm (140 grains/US gal)
Silicon concentration: minimum of 100 ppm and maximum of 275 ppm 3000 hours or 1 year SCA at initial fill and SCA at maintenance intervals
