INSTALL NEW CONNECTING ROD AND MAIN BEARINGS IN CERTAIN APPLICATIONS OF 3406, 3408, 3412, D343, D346, D348 ENGINES, 1202, 1230, PI7099 U-57 A-37 AU-48 B-22 C-52 E-35 O-43 SEE AUGUST 21, 1984 optional If there is an actual bearing failure in the above engines in any off-highway vehicular applications, see June 28, 1984 Service Letter, PS0228. Problem The connecting rod bearings and crankshaft main bearings in the listed machines may still need a longer service life. Failures can begin when the lead-tin overlay is worn off and the sensitive nickel-bonded material is exposed. New, copper-bonded rod bearings and main bearings are used in production and for parts service. Copper, instead of nickel, is the bonding agent between the lead-tin overlay and the aluminum. Copper is more scuff resistant after the lead-tin overlay is worn off. Affected Models And New Parts Needed The models with the listed serial numbers are included in this Program if they meet the SMU (Service Meter Units) and age requirements stated in the topic, "Warranty allowances". The following chart lists vehicle and engine serial numbers. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Additional parts needed if crankshaft is replaced: 3406 3408 3412 Description 0R5129 0R5067 0R5070 * Crankshaft Assembly or or or 2W2585 7N3407 4N7755 Crankshaft Assembly 7N1999 7N1999 7N1999 Seal Group D343 D346 D348 Description 0R5124 0R5135 0R5093 * Crankshaft Assembly or or or 2P3839 6N8324 1W7578 Crankshaft Assembly 2P3846 2P3846 2P3846 Seal 2P3847 2P3847 2P3847 Sleeve 2W6848 2W6848 2W6848 Ring * 0.63 mm (0.025") undersize crankshafts. See October 10, 1983 Service Magazine for the new undersize bearings for all six engine models. These are metric dimensioned bearings and thus are identified only by the metric size on the backside. Each half of the 4W5702 Bearing, for example, has "0.63 US" stamped on the backside. Action Requested (Parts Stock Action Not Required) If the new bearings are installed, all new rod and main bearings should be used. Refer to the Attachment for important things to do during and after the installation of new bearings. Once both copper bond main and rod bearings are installed, the practice of bearing replacement between overhauls should be discontinued. Service Engineering may request inspection of some copper bond bearings prior to overhaul to monitor their condition. Warranty Allowances The labor and parts to replace bearings during engine overhaul are for the user's account. List related gaskets, seals, and specified labor. Claims for actual failures are covered by the June 28, 1984 Service Letter, PS0228. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Install Oil Pump Additional Hours To Model Bearings-Hr. Hr.
