Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
1. Lower bucket of the machine to the floor.2. Activate the parking brake.3. Remove the rear crankcase guard under the radiator. Refer to the topic "Remove and Install Crankcase Guards" in this module.4. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly loosening the filler cap on the radiator. Drain the coolant from the radiator in a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the cooling system is 183 liters (47.6 U.S. gal). 5. Support radiator guard assembly hood (1) with Tooling (A) and a suitable hoist and chains. Remove eight bolts (2) and radiator guard assembly hood (1). The weight of the radiator guard hood is 70 lbs. 6. Disconnect upper radiator tube assembly (3) and (5) and turbocharger coolant tube assembly (4) from the upper radiator tank.7. Remove ten bolts (7) and baffle assemblies (6). 8. Disconnect upper radiator tube assemblies (3) and (5) and turbocharger coolant tube assembly (4) from the engine.
