Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check the Connectors
A. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
B. Connect to the ECM using Cat ET.
C. Record all active and logged codes.
D. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
E. Allow the system to completely power down before disconnecting connectors.
F. Thoroughly inspect the connectors that are associated with the data link circuits. Verify that the connectors are free of debris, free of corrosion, and securely connected.
Connectors
Result: The connectors were connected properly and did not have corrosion or moisture.
If a -11 code is active or logged, proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 3216-12, 3655-12, 3226-12, or 3609-12 code is active or logged.
Repair: Replace the appropriate NOx sensor. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS8151 for special handling instructions.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: A 3516-12 or 3100-12 code is active or logged.
Repair: Replace the DEF tank header. Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly for removal and installation instructions. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: A 3516-2 or 3100-2 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: A 5742-12 or 5405-12 code is active or logged.
Repair: Replace the DPF temperature sensor module. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly , Temperature Sensor (DPF Inlet, Flame Detect) - Remove and Install.
Turn the keyswitch to ON. Verify that the code is no longer active. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The connectors were not connected properly or the connectors did have corrosion or moisture.
Repair: Repair the connectors and/or the wiring. Replace parts, if necessary. Verify that the original problem is resolved.
Result: A 5491-12 or 3822-12 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
2. Check the Voltage to the Suspect NOx Sensor.
A. Disconnect the suspect sensor from the wiring harness.
B. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
C. Measure the voltage between battery "SUPPLY" and "RETURN" on the wiring harness connector of the suspect sensor.
Battery Voltage
Result: The measured voltage is equal to battery voltage.
Repair: Replace the failed NOx Sensor. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS8151 for special handling instructions.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The measured voltage is not equal to battery voltage.
Repair: There is a problem with an intermittent battery supply. Check the power supply to the suspect sensor.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
3. Check the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Quality
A. Measure the DEF quality. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality - Test.
DEF
Result: The DEF is not contaminated and the concentration is not within the acceptable range.
Repair: Drain the DEF from the DEF tank. Refill the DEF tank with DEF that meets ISO 22241 quality standards.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The DEF is not contaminated and the concentration is within acceptable range.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The DEF is contaminated.
Repair: Contact the DSN for further information.
4. Inspect the DEF Quality Sensor
A. Remove the DEF tank header from the DEF tank.
B. Inspect the DEF tank and DEF manifold filter for debris.
C. Inspect the DEF quality sensor for visible debris. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank - Flush procedure.
DEF Quality Sensor
Result: Debris was found in the DEF tank, DEF header manifold filter, or the DEF quality sensors.
Repair: Flush the DEF tank and replace all the DEF filters. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank - Flush procedure.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: No debris was found or a DEF quality sensor is damaged.
Repair: Replace the DEF tank header assembly and fill the tank with DEF that meets ISO 22241 quality standards.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Perform the Aftertreatment System Functional Test.
A. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
B. Start the engine.
C. Connect to the ECM using Cat ET.
D. Perform the "Aftertreatment System Functional Test".
Aftertreatment System Functional Test
Result: The test completed successfully.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The test was unsuccessful. There are more codes.
Repair: Troubleshoot the fault that became active during the "Aftertreatment System Functional Test". After the issue has been resolved, run the "Aftertreatment System Functional Test" again.
Return the unit to service.
6. Check the Voltage to the DEF Heater Relay
A. Disconnect the DEF heater relay from the wiring harness.
B. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
C. Measure the voltage between the battery supply and the battery return on the DEF heater relay connector (Pin-1 Battery+, Pin-2 Battery-).
Battery Voltage
Result: The measured voltage is equal to battery voltage.
Repair: Replace the failed DEF heater relay. Verify the repair fixed the issue by running the "DEF Line Heater Test" in Cat ET.
Return the unit to service.
Result: The measured voltage is not equal to battery voltage.
Repair: There is an intermittent battery supply. Check the power supply to the DEF heater relay. Verify the repair fixed the issue by running the "DEF Line Heater Test" in Cat ET.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator
