Introduction
With the release of Tier 4 Final engines, additional emissions control system components have been added to the engine to reduce the NOx output. The addition of these components requires three Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) for the engine and aftertreatment systems to operate. The most recent version of Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) must be used when connecting the engine. When the controllers are flashed, the computer and Comm Adapter 3 that will be used to flash the controllers on the engine must be set up properly in order to avoid issues caused by a failed flash file installation. The purpose of this special instruction is to show how the power settings for both the Comm Adapter 3 and the computer must be set up in order to avoid a flashing issue.Computer Settings
Turn off Power Management of USB Root Hubs.
Windows can sometimes power down USB devices when the PC enters standby mode, even if the USB devices are in use. For instance, during a long ECM flash programming operation if the screen saver engages, Windows may turn off the power to the CA3 USB port and interrupt the flash causing the flash to fail.In order to eliminate this problem, it is recommended that the power management on the USB root hubs is disabled.

When using the Comm adapter 3 normally, power is received from both the nine pin connector and from the USB port on the computer. Using the Comm adapter 3 normally can cause electrical interference when sending a flash file. Using the power toggle allows the user to turn off the power coming from the USB port to minimize the electrical interference. After this procedure is performed, the Comm adapter 3 will only turn on when connected to machine power. The power supply from the USB to the Comm adapter 3 can be turned back on if needed.
Plug the Communications Adapter 3 into the USB port on the computer and make sure that the adapter is powered on.
In Cat® ET 2013A or newer, select the "Communications Adapter 3 Toolkit" from the "Utilities" menu.
