Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Turn the breaker to the ON position.
B. Establish communication between Caterpillar® Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
C. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Diagnostic Code
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: An E954 or 1761 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Customer DEF Tank Level
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position.
B. Visually inspect the level of DEF in the customer DEF tank.
DEF Level
Result: The customer DEF tank level is low.
Repair: Add DEF to the DEF tank #1.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
Result: The customer DEF tank level is NOT low.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Inspect the Customer Tank and Supply Lines
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position.
B. Visually inspect the customer tank and all of the DEF lines between the customer tank and buffer tank.
C. Inspect the lines to ensure that the lines are connected and not damaged.
DEF Lines
Result: The DEF supply line form the customer tank to the buffer tank are connected and are not damaged.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The DEF supply lines from the customer tank to the buffer tank are NOT connected or are damaged.
Repair: Repair or replace the lines if damaged.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
4. Monitor the "DEF Tank #1 Level"
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position for 1 minute to allow the ECM to power down.
B. Turn the DC breaker to the ON position.
C. Ensure that the air supply to the Dosing Cabinet is ON.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Monitor the "DEF Tank #1 Level" for 10 minutes.
Note: After the "DEF Tank #1 Level" reaches 90%, tank will stop filling automatically.
DEF Tank Level
Result: The "DEF Tank #1 Level" increased.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
Result: The "DEF Tank #1 Level" did NOT increase.
Repair: Clean or replace the DEF filter.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Monitor the "DEF Tank #1 Level"
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position for 1 minute to allow the ECM to power down.
B. Turn the DC breaker to the ON position.
C. Ensure that the air supply to the Dosing Cabinet is ON.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Monitor the "DEF Tank #1 Level" for 10 minutes.
Note: After the "DEF Tank #1 Level" reaches 90%, tank will stop filling automatically.
DEF Tank Level
Result: The "DEF Tank #1 Level" increased.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem. Return to service.
Result: The "DEF Tank #1 Level" did NOT increase.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the DEF Transfer Pump (if equipped)
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position for 1 minute to allow the ECM to power down.
B. Turn the DC breaker to the ON position.
C. Ensure that the air supply to the Dosing Cabinet is ON.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to activate the following overrides:.
- "Aftertreatment #1 DEF Tank Refill Solenoid Override"
Note: After the DEF Tank #1 Level reaches 90%, the override will automatically turn off.
DEF Transfer Pump
Result: There is no DEF transfer pump installed.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
Result: The DEF transfer pump is operational.
Proceed to Test Step 9.
Result: The DEF transfer pump is NOT operational.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Check the DEF Transfer Pump Relay Control Circuit
A. Turn the DC breaker to the OFF position.
B. Disconnect the DEF transfer pump relay from the wiring harness connector.
C. Turn the DC breaker to the ON position.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to activate the following overrides:.
- "Aftertreatment #1 DEF Tank Refill Solenoid Override"
F. Measure the voltage on the control side of the relay.
DEF Relay Circuit
Result: There is battery voltage on the control side of the relay.
