Start By:a. remove fuel priming pumpFluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Open the engine access doors on the left side of the machine.2. Close the fuel main supply valve. Position a suitable container under the fuel/water separator bowl and the fuel filter to hold any fuel that may drain from the fuel filter base assembly.3. Disconnect hose assembly (1) and hose assembly (4) from fuel filter base assembly (2). Cap and plug all connections.4. Turn the drain valve located on the bottom of fuel/water separator bowl (6) in a counterclockwise direction to drain the fuel that is in fuel filter element (5) and fuel/water separator bowl (6).5. Close the drain valve, and remove fuel/water separator bowl (6) and O-ring seal (not shown) from fuel filter element (5).6. Using Tooling (A) (not shown), remove fuel filter element (5) from fuel filter base assembly (2).7. Remove two nuts and bolts (3) and the washers that hold fuel filter base assembly (2) to the mounting bracket. Remove fuel filter base assembly (2). The following steps are for the installation of the fuel filter base and fuel filter.
Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. The fuel system should be primed prior to starting engine.
8. Put fuel filter base assembly (3) in position on the mounting bracket, and install two nuts and bolts (2) and the washers. If the fuel filter is being replaced with a new filter, the filter comes with a new O-ring seal for the fuel/water separator bowl and a new seal for the top of the fuel filter. Do not discard the fuel/water separator bowl, the bowl is reusable. Install the seal located on the top of fuel filter element (5) with the beveled side up, if applicable.9. Lubricate the seal located on the top of fuel filter element (5) with clean diesel fuel or engine oil. Install fuel filter (5) on fuel filter base assembly (2). Refer to the diagram on the fuel filter element for the correct tightening procedure.
Install the fuel/water separator bowl on the fuel filter snugly by hand. Do not use tools to tighten.
10. Lubricate O-ring seal with clean diesel fuel or engine oil. Install O-ring seal on fuel/water separator bowl (6). Install fuel/water separator bowl (6) on fuel filter (5) snugly by hand. Do not use tools to tighten.11. Reconnect hose assembly (1) and hose assembly (4) to fuel filter base assembly (2).12. Open the fuel main supply valve. Prime the fuel system. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for the correct procedure on priming the fuel system.End By:a. install fuel priming pump
